94.1FM is a soccer-mom rock station. It's a Clear Channel radio station; it's popular and it's everything that San Diego music snobs hate.
94.1FM starts the day off with the relentlessly wholesome entertainment, otherwise known as the flagship show Jeff and Jer in the Morning. They then fill the rest of the timeslots with clean top 40 music delivered by forgettable FM DJ personalities that make the dingy guitar center employee guy with an attitude the dingy guitar center employee guy with an attitude.
Every year 94.1FM throws Jingle Ball, a Christmas Concert/Power Pop Extravaganza that is the yearly summit for people that buy into what the man sells them. This is when San Diego soccer moms get excited. This is when their hipster children run for the hills. This is when the following conversation occurs every November in every San Diego household that is headed by a member of the 94.1FM army:
Soccer Mom: I got Jingle Ball tickets!
Hipster Kid: Do you really think I want to see Matchbox 20?
Soccer Mom: Is that the band with that crazy Carlos Santana?
Hipster Kid: Yeah Mom, it is. The fact that you actually believe that is the main reason why I am going to hate myself for turning into you later in life.
Soccer Mom: I remember seeing him in San Francisco back in the 1960's - I was on so much acid back then.
Hipster Kid: Whatever Mom, can you drive me to Guitar Center? My friend is working.
The End
San Diego Jingle Ball 20007 is on December 9th at the I Pay One Center and will feature Duran Duran, Lenny Kravitz, Vanessa Carlton, and Matchbox 20. Bring your mom, if she doesn't already have tickets.
