Derived from the Japanese “min” for people and “gei” meaning art, the word “mingei” has become an internationally recognized term for “art of the people.” The Mingei International Museum has grown from its original UTC location to become two museums: a 41,000-square-foot facility in Balboa Park (opened in 1996) and a North County satellite in Escondido (opened in 2003).
The Mingei’s highly diversified holdings include everything from dolls and weather vanes to ceramics and finely crafted jewelry from around the world. Highlighting self-taught artists, the museum counts several large-scale, delightfully whimsical sculptures by Niki de Saint Phalle among its collection of over 16,000 objects.
