When the Museum of Photographic Arts first opened in 1983, it stood as one of the very few photography museums in the United States. Its collection has since bulged to over 7,000 objects covering the entire world history of photography, from the first Daguerreotypes to contemporary digital images.

An expansion of the museum’s facilities in 2000 not only added much-needed gallery space, but also included a cozy 220-seat state-of-the-art theater for viewing films and video. The museum is also distinguished by its store, which boasts the most complete collection of books on photography and video art in the region.
