Saber-tooth cats, mammoths, sea cows, giant sharks, and dinosaurs (of course!) are just some of the many critters that roamed our region’s hillsides and coastal waters over the past 75 million years. An $8 million permanent exhibition titled “Fossil Mysteries” (opened in 2006) at the San Diego Natural History Museum brings them all to life through life-sized, fully fleshed-out recreations.

Founded in 1874, the San Diego Natural History Museum occupies a 1930s era building in Balboa Park that doubled in size in 2001. The new wing features a state-of-the-art, 300-seat movie theater/lecture hall and the atrium-level Dinosaur Café, which is ably managed by the Cohn Restaurant Group.

Time to get lost in History

I took my little brother to the museum when he came down last summer. He's the quiet type and I felt that the museum was the perfect way to spend time with each other without boring each other. While the dinosaur exhibit was cool, the mummy exhibit really peaked his interests. Something about mummified people that really interests him... Anyway, it's a fun diversion if you're looking to spend a couple of hours cracking jokes and taking in history.

SueBeeHoney is confusing the San Diego Natural History Museum which focuses on the natural world with the San Diego Museum of Man which focuses on human history. We do, indeed, have dinosaurs, but no mummies.
