San Diego Rocky Horror Picture Show at La Paloma Theatre

Published : 11/7/2007 by Craig Slike

Every Friday night, at Midnight, for the past 30 years, an interactive viewing of The Rocky Horror Picture Show has taken place somewhere in the world, making it the longest running theatrical release in film history. San Diego's Rocky Horror version is shown at the La Paloma Theatre in Encinitas.

Rocky Horror is a rock-musical spoof of old science-fiction and horror films staring Tim Curry and Susan Sarandon. A live cast accompanies the cult classic making it more of a theatrical than cinematic event.

Rocky Horror is the first and only true participation movie. People yell back lines at the screen during the extended dialogue pauses, dress-up in tribute costume, act out the script, and throw props on stage, and in the air, throughout the film.

If it's your first time seeing the RHPC in a theater you are considered a "virgin" and may be asked to participate in a virgin ritual. Don't worry; it's all in good fun. If you really don't want to participate simply point to the person next to you and inform the cast they are a "virgin" as well, thus removing yourself from under the bus, replacing your now-former friend in your stead.

Upon your subsequent returns you can then bring the props you saw everyone else parading the last time. These can range from rice to water, toast, and newspapers. The props and participation differ in every city and every venue.

Bring a crowd of friends, have a few preparatory drinks and plan to stay out all night. Post-game 24 hour diners and taco shops (Filiberto's) are all part of the experience.

The San Diego Rocky Horror Picture Show at La Paloma Theatre is only $8 and is located at 471 South Coast Highway in downtown Encinitas.

Insider Tip: Whenever you hear the name Brad Majors, yell "A-HOLE."

Horrible!!

I went to the Rocky Horror Picture Show last night. After we each paid our $9 to get into the show, they had all of the 1st Timers line up in the aisle. We didn't know what was happening or what was about to come. I had been told that they just like to embarrass the 1st timers. Then the entire cast and crew came running down the aisle and proceeded to slap each of our backsides. I'm not even talking about light slaps. They were hard enough to make imprints. One guy actually wound his arm up to get momentum, one guy had a paddle, and one guy had a whip. Not only was this a incredibly demeaning, but this was near assault. It would have been one thing if they had warned us about what was going to happen and gave us a choice in participating, but we didn't know until they actually started hitting us. I've been to other shows which had audience participation, but I've never been hit before. Even after that we stayed to see what was going to happen. They put the movie on and then they proceed to do the exact same things the movie is doing while screaming obscenities. Ultimately I feel just from being there I lost about 50 IQ points. Never Again! Save your money! And if you do go, don't let them hit you!

Crazed Imaginations Rocks!

Jesus, CJ, you are a pussy! It's bad enough you went whining to the city council about the games, but now you have to go around blasting the cast. If you're so scared, you didn't have to stand up. Besides, you stand up if you've never seen the show before. But now you're saying that you've seen other shows. So you're whiny and a liar! I think I need to post this all the places you have! Go see this show and support your local cast! Don't let the crappy MTV remake win!

Totally fun!

Went for the first time last night! I've wanted to go since I was 15 but never had the chance until now, at 19! It was totally fun! The actors make it really fun. Yeah they do embarrass you if you are a 1st timer, but it's just their way of saying welcome! Plus, you have a chance of saying no, they even talk about it DURING THE RULES "No means no. Silence is consent." Or you could just tell them you've been before. I hope to go again real soon and maybe one day I'll learn all the things they say!

Critique

Since I have been a fan of the Rocky Horror Picture Show for twenty years, I’ve decided to visit La Paloma Theatre on Friday the 13th. To my dismay, it was the worse Rocky Horror experience that I’ve attended and (for the first time) walked out of half through the feature. First, the several emcees who ran up and down the aisles were screaming different jokes of the movie AT THE SAME TIME. Second, the performers were tripping over each other on the stage and forgetting essential cues in their performance. Three, the audience seemed to want to scoff at the movie whether than want to be part of the experience of the midnight showing. It wouldn’t surprise me if someone like Sal Piro would feel disgraced by this example of chaos created out of such a great tradition as RHPS.

1st Timers?

I've been a fan of the RHPS for a few years (; And I've never seen it but I'm planning to go very soon. And I've heard things about what they do if you're a "V" x] Just say you've seen it before! xD

Not like the good 'ol days, but still fun.

The cult-classic movie was still great, but the performance of the live players at The La Paloma Theatre quickly became annoying. Their interpretation of the movie took on a screeching, cacophic life of it's own, interfering with the movie, instead of enhancing it. If you decide to go, Google the list of audience participation items that you'll want to take with you to the show...squirt guns, toast, a newspaper, etc. And one extra item, that I suggest, would be some ear plugs to drown out the incessant noise of the live performers. Now, I wouldn't recommend this as a first date destination. And if sexual deviance and obscenities make you too uncomfortable, don't go to this movie showing. But, if you are open to a unique experience, and have never been to the Rocky Horror Picture Show, you should go at least once. And on the upside, you won't know to be disappointed that you missed out on the far superior interpretations of the 1980's.
