Every year, around the holidays, in cities all across the nation, the streets run red with thousands of crimson clad Kris Kringles racing not from chimney to child delivering presents, but rather from bar to tavern spreading good cheer to all who cross their path.
Everyone (over 21) who is filled with the Christmas spirit, or would like to be filled with holiday spirits, is invited to join in San Diego's first annual Running of the Santas on Saturday, December 8, 2007 in Pacific Beach, one week before Philadelphia (the founding city), and the rest of the country (13 cities in all).
Drink specials from Bombora Vodka and Mount Gay Rum will be available for those wearing their Santa suits (or other holiday themed costumes), and each bar will feature a specialty holiday drink mixed up just for Jolly Old St. Nick.
Dressing up is mandatory and choosing a creative theme for your group is highly encouraged. Elvis Santas, Hawaiian Santas and Disco Santas are all acceptable, as well as reindeer, elves and Santa's little helpers.
This is actually more of a pub crawl than a race and participants are expected to act accordingly. The first set of jingle bells are a 5 minute warning that the Santa's are moving on, so finish your drink. When you hear the second ringing of the bells, follow Rudolph's lead down the street to the next stop.
It's not all just for fun and games though, there's a good cause hiding behind all the shenanigans. Your "entrance fee" will be a charitable donation to the victims of the recent San Diego wildfires and there will be a Salvation Army truck for you to drop off house hold items for those in need.
