Seaport Village Turns 30 with a 30 Hour Carousel Challenge

The salty smell of the sea mixed with some of the most endearing shopping and amusing entertainment has made Seaport Village of San Diego sustain a familiar and fantastical quality for locals and tourists alike. Thirty years in the making, the popular destination has built a history of shopping with celebration, a virtue honored deep in the hearts of every true San Diego lifestyle enthusiast.

Seaport Village’s 30th anniversary commemorates a rich and dynamic journey that has become nothing less than a favorite destination for every resident and traveler. Since 1980, Seaport Village has embraced shopping and dining developments along 4 miles of meandering cobblestone pathways set along the water’s edge. The varying architectural shops and eateries have long been enhanced by the sights and sounds of street-performers, live entertainment, and the classically historic 1895 antique carousel. With eclectic shopping offerings, visitors through the years have taken home such treasures as wind chimes, music boxes, jewelry, candles, mugs, books, art, and much more memorabilia.

The cherished downtown waterfront attraction that stretches across 14-acres boasts more than 50 shops, 13 casual dining eateries and 4 esteemed fine dining restaurants. Originally built over the Punta de los Muertos landfill, Seaport Village has developed significantly since its beginnings some 30 years ago, while still retaining many of its most beloved beginning quirks.

Party Time: The 30th anniversary celebration and challenge invites seaside lovers to come out and party October 8th & 9th. Three decades of brilliant entertainment, shopping, and dining calls for a collective fusion of young and old, locals and visitors to honor the abounding history. Fourteen of the original Seaport Village tenants will add to the recognition of the village’s achievement, including Greek Islands Café, Asaggios, Village Hat Shop, Swings n’ Things and Apple Box Toys. Recognizable and charming, these shops have built upon the worth and value within 30 years of business in the community.

Turning a festivity into a bit of a friendly challenge, the 2-day celebration will be holding a “30 for 30 Carousel Challenge,” designed to spin 30 competitors on the infamous carousel for 30 hours. The hand-carved animals will begin to revolve at 10:00am on Friday and will reward the last person standing at 4:00pm on Saturday. Those who accept the challenge will also face elimination through trivia questions and ongoing pressure from spectators invited to ride the carousel throughout the event.

It’s an all-night party as a DJ, live entertainment, food and beverages are served to keep the crowd up and energized at all hours. A special midnight power-hour bash will boost moral for the carousel contestants as the riding continues at full-speed, non-stop forces. This marathon carousel ride honors the 30 years of Seaport Village memories, while symbolizing the future and what is to come.

With the spirit of the past, present, and future, Seaport Village invites you to celebrate their achievement of 30 years as an icon in San Diego history. Seaport Village is located at West Harbor Drive and Pacific Highway, adjacent to Embarcadero Park North. For more information, please call 619.235.4014 or visit Seaport Village in San Diego.
