The most unlikely San Diego holiday tradition is upon us. Sycuan's "Fantasy on Ice" brings a snow bound winter experience to sunny southern California at the outdoor rink next to Horton Plaza.
The rink itself is small, usually crowded and in constant need of a Zamboni; but all that is beside the point. This attraction is all about the novelty: you're skating outside - and it's about 70 degrees! If you go at night the temperatures can plunge to about 60 or even 55, so bring a jacket.
Popular with parents of small children, teens, and couples this manmade San Diego ice skating rink is a great opportunity for people watching, especially if you like watching people fall down. It's the perfect opportunity to get in touch with your inner Grinch. Your best bet is to head down there for lunch to catch the field trips. If you work downtown, pack a lunch and pull up a spot on the newly added bleachers.
Midday is the best because try as they might- they just can't keep that ice from melting, so the top layer is spotted with treacherous puddles, if not completely covered by a small lake. People still go out there though and hilarity ensues. Keep you eyes pealed for the wobbly, the windmill arms, and the guys trying to show off for their girls. Not only will they eventually fall in humiliation, they will also be soaked in melted ice and slush. Weekends work well too if you're not near the Gaslamp midweek.
The San Diego ice rink is open from 10am to 10pm, starting November 15, and continuing to January 6, 2008. Admission is $12 for Adults and $10 for kids (including skate rental). Christmas Eve and New Years Day are open until 5pm. All proceeds benefit the Cancer Care Center at Rady Children's Hospital.
