Every now and then, we need an excuse to escape the city madness for the calm chill of North County. Way up north, Carlsbad is hosting a big Beach Fest on Saturday, June 9. And we won’t be the only ones cruising up the coast; more than 12,000 people are expected to attend this year.
It’s an annual event with a multitude of activities spread along a mile of sandy beach from Pine Avenue to Tamarack State Beach, including swim and surf, dance and fitness, sand-sculpting and kite-flying, and of course, simple sun bathing. More event perks include local bands live across multiple stages, green product vendors and a health and safety expo.
‘Tis the season to get active, and Beach Fest offers a variety of competitive sporting events throughout the day. Try your luck in a triathlon, duathlon and a one-mile ocean swim, or show off your skills in one of the pro and amateur surf contests sponsored by SurfRide. There will be stand up paddleboard races, as well as a Zumba-thon fitness party -- a fun way to burn calories with friends. These sporting events are priced separately and do require early registration, which you can complete online.
Finish off the day of beach fun at Ocean House, home to the official after party from 7 to 10pm.
Carlsbad Beach Fest is a free community event open to all ages, with activities running from 8am through the late afternoon on the sandy beach. For more information, visit carlsbadbeachfest.com
