The Art of Fugue: A Music and Dance Collaboration

In a collaboration that is as harmonious as it is rare, the Bach Collegium San Diego joins IMAGOmoves for a collision of contemporary dance and classical music.

Guest Director Rodolfo Richter and Choreographer Yolande Snaith take charge in this project, which will debut at the Molli and Arthur Wagner Dance Building at UC San Diego on Friday, Feb. 3rd and Saturday, Feb. 4th.

“J.S. Bach: The Art of Fugue” features contemporary dancers Yolande Snaith, Alison Smith, Alicia Peterson-Baskel and Anya Cloud interacting with the live Baroque music by the great composer Johann Sebastian Bach, as performed by soloist Angela Young Smucker. Their movements and the music explore the human passions of joy, temptation, grief, and hope expressed in selections from Bach’s Art of Fugue and Cantata arias. As stated by Richter, the performance is intended to capture fleeting, transient, ephemeral, momentary, and brief as the “fugitive nature of life.”

Richter is an acclaimed chamber musician and conductor, and leader of Britain’s Academy of Ancient Music. Snaith is the head of Dance Theatre department at UC San Diego. The Bach Collegium San Diego aims to enrich San Diego’s music community by presenting historically informed performances of the Renaissance, Baroque and the vocal works of J.S. Bach.

Performances on Feb. 3rd and 4th will begin at 7:30pm and will be preceded by an informal discussion on the music at 6:45pm, providing an opportunity to discuss the various topics related to the forthcoming concert.

Tickets to individual concerts are $25 or $40. Seniors and students can purchase tickets for $20. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit the BCSD website.
