The Globe Gala is always one of the year’s most exciting black-tie events in the San Diego arts community, and this year proves to be no exception. The Old Globe Theatre, one of our leading regional theatres, invites guests to take part in a memorable night filled with dining, dancing, and an outstanding performance on Saturday, July 30. The evening will honor Audrey Geisel, famously known as Mrs. Seuss, in her philanthropy and countless contributions to the theatre. Darlene Shiley and Sheryl White will be co-chairing this function.
The gala will begin with an elegant reception, followed by a silent auction which will allow guests to indulge in unique purchases and special offers. An exquisite performance of Maestro: The Art of Leonard Bernstein, featuring Hershey Felder, will then entertain the crowd. The evening will be made complete with dinner and dancing on the Globe’s Copley Plaza, with music provided by Impulse and catering provided by the Sheraton San Diego Hotel and Marina.
The summer season at the Old Globe Theatre is already in full bloom, with several incredible productions being shown over the following months. Much Ado About Nothing, a Shakespeare classic directed by Ron Daniels, is playing until September 24 as part of the annual Summer Shakespeare Festival. This charming comedy follows the story of young lovers and makes for an intriguing romantic viewing.
The Tempest, another signature Shakespeare performance, will be showing until September 25. Directed by Adrian Noble, this adventurous tale is known to be one of the highest acclaimed in all of Shakespeare’s works. Amadeus, a classic directed by Adrian Noble, will be playing through September 22. Written by Peter Shaffer, Amadeus has received not only the coveted Tony Award for Best Play but also an Academy Award in the Best Film category.
The Engaging Shaw, a clever comedy written by John Morogiello and directed by Henry Wishcamper, will be playing through September 4. This showing is the West Coast premiere of the new charming and witty tale. Last but certainly not least, Maestro: The Art of Leonard Bernstein will be playing until August 28, and is set to be the spotlight performance of the Old Globe Gala. This work is the fourth collaboration of writer Hershey Felder and director Joel Zwick, and features original music written by Leonard Bernstein himself.
