Pirates never really go out of style, but they have enjoyed a historic resurgence in recent years as proven by the popularity of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, the prevalence of scruffy facial hair in local rock bands, and Super Bowl XXXVII.
Taking advantage of this piratical revival to celebrate a jaunty lifestyle, the San Diego Maritime Museum is throwing its annual Sea Chantey Festival on board the Star of India on September 21st from 11am – 5pm.
Chanteys began as a way to synchronize work at sea, while at the same time raising the spirits of the crew. During the Sea Chantey Festival, the Star of India crew will be providing work-chantey demonstrations. You may even be recruited to help out.
The Sea Chantey Festival is included in the regular price of admission to the San Diego Maritime Museum ($12, less for various discounts, including AAA) and also includes access to the Berkley paddle wheel, a soviet submarine, and a ship from Master and Commander.
Chantey Festival Schedule:
11am - The Jackstraws
11:45am - Salt Pork & Dunderfunk
12:30pm - Gilman Carver
1:30pm - Oceans Apart
