The San Diego Maritime Museum on the Embarcadero is more than a gallery of seafaring artifacts—it’s a virtual port! Its fleet even includes a Cold War–era Soviet sub now berthed amid its former US Navy adversaries. The 1898 steam ferryboat, “The Berkeley,” houses the museum’s exhibition galleries, offices, and gift store, and the newly acquired “HMS Surprise,” a replica of an 18th-century Royal Navy frigate, starred in the Academy Award–winning film, Master and Commander. But the real star of the Maritime Museum’s collection is the San Diego landmark “Star of India,” the world’s oldest active ship.

The harbor of downtown

This is the right place to learn about and feel history at the time of the Cold War. The ships are exhibited with numerous miniature ships. After the trip through the "Star of India" you can buy souveniers that will remind you of that great day.
