The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego is celebrating the sensation of one of their most ambitious exhibits to date, Phenomenal: California Light, Space, Surface. This month’s Thursday Night Thing on November 3rd invites guests to experience the impressive display with some added glitz and fall glam, from 7 to 10pm.
Guests can arrive expecting an above-average museum experience, heightened with the help of cocktails, live music by Hayena and Lesands, an immersive installation by Ela Boyd, art-making activities designed by the Teen Art Council, and exclusive visits with some of the artists in the installation. With all the imagery, lights and sensory overload, hand-crafted street snacks will be provided by MiHo Gastrotruck to replenish, using only fresh and seasonal ingredients. Viva Pops will be supplying the sweets as well; the final touch to a night of total satisfaction.
Phenomenal: California Light, Space, Surface includes the works of Robert Irwin, James Turrell, Doug Wheeler, Mary Corse, Larry Bell and more. The exhibit focuses on using various forms and structures of light through the use of transparent, translucent materials. The art that takes over entire spaces of the room also feature a number of sculptures and paintings functioning as prisms or mirrors to activate the space surrounding them. Combining key works from the Museum's collection with major loans from prominent public and private collections, immersive light installations fuse with rare, ephemeral, and site-conditioned works, some seen for the first time in decades.
Artist James Turrell’s Stuck Red and Stuck Blue, pictured, is constructed from various materials with strongly moving fluorescent lights. Turrell has worked for forty years exploring light and its thought-provoking contemporary art qualities, said to have an uplifting effect on viewers. The other artists show similar concepts, taking audiences into a different world of light.
Support Phenomenal with the dynamic and interactive Thursday Night Thing event, taking over the Jacobs Building of MCASD Downtown on Thursday, November 3rd. The ongoing exhibition is on view at the Museum's La Jolla and Downtown San Diego locations from September 25, 2011 through January 22, 2012. TNT is free for members, $8 for students and $10 general admission. For more information, visit mcasd.org.
