Best San Diego Pumpkin Patches

Posted On : 10/5/2011 by Amy Ebersole

As the season for costumes and candy creeps in, we San Diegans are savoring the last bits of seaside sun, picking out our favorite pumpkin patches, and planning pumpkin carving contests.

We’ve harvested a list of the best pumpkin patches in San Diego so you can hop on the holiday hayride and stock up for the season.

Bates Nuts Farm- Valley Center

Bates Nuts Farm provides all types of nutty news for San Diego pumpkin pickers. Open from 9am to 5pm until Halloween, this patch possesses the authentic farm feel that will make any Halloween holiday feel complete. With tractor hayrides or a straw maze for $2 and pony rides or an interactive petting corral for $5, these prices are picked to please. Bring the family wagon down for the weekend for face painting, rock climbing, or live entertainment from noon to 3pm. Or get ready to undo that top button with the ice cream, kettle corn, or hamburgers and hot dogs from 10am to 1pm. And feel free to feast your eyes on the Nuts for the Arts Fine Art Faire from 9am to 4pm on Saturday and Sunday Oct. 8 and 9. Or come vote for the best scarecrow during Saturday’s contest. For more information, visit Bates Nuts Farm.

Oma’s Pumkin Patch- Lakeside

Oma's Pumpkin Patch is a Halloween haven of fall festivities and prime pumpkin picks. Located in Lakeside, this patch also provides hayrides and a petting zoo. Open 10am to 7pm Tuesday through Saturday until November 5, the admission fee is $7 per child 1 year and older and one adult per child gets to join in on the fun for free. Additional adults, 16 years and older, are $3. Each child receives a water bottle and a Jack Patch pumpkin and is able to participate in all activities. Included in the ticket price is also a multitude of “kid-powered” games and unlimited access to a sand pile with toy trucks and tractors, playground equipment, and Cottonseed Mountain, a giant inflatable slide. With pumpkin sizes ranging from tiny to 100 plus pounds, this patch is not only fun, but a premier place to stock up on great pumpkins, corn, gourds, and hay bales. For more information, visit Oma’s Pumpkin Patch.

Summers Past Farms- Flinn Springs

Prepare, as the pumpkin patch special events at Summers Past Farms are almost here. Pumpkin Patch Weekend is from Oct. 8 to 9 and 15 to 16 and is fully primped and primed with a harvest of countless crops ranging in shape and size. If visiting on Oct. 23, you’ll be in for quite the fair at Alpine Education Foundation’s Second Annual Fall Festival. Hosting real draft horse-drawn hayrides, a farm animal exhibit, face painting, an air jump, and loads of balloons, food, and treats, all the money raised at this event will go to helping local schools. Open 9am to 5pm Wednesday through Saturday and 10am to 5pm on Sunday, it’s worth making a stop at this pumpkin shop. For more information, visit Summers Past Farms.

Mountain Valley Ranch Pumpkin Patch- Ramona

Did you know that rubbing all carved surfaces of your jack-o-lantern with petroleum jelly keeps out bacteria and dramatically reduces dehydration? Well, the experts at Mountain Valley Ranch Pumpkin Patch do, and they offer more tips for keeping your carved works of art cool during Halloween season. Offering pumpkins, gourds, Indian corn, or popping corn along with various entertainment such as a corn maze, petting zoo, and corn cannon, this picking ground is open 9am to 6pm daily until Halloween. And with its combination of large town amenities and small town charm, this patch is uniquely located in an area once referred to as the Valley of the Sun by local natives. Bring cash and pick up more tips to reduce pumpkin aging or some tasty recipes for roasting your pumpkin seeds to extend this season long past your pumpkin’s expiration date. Lavender Hill Pumpkins- Fallbrook

Touted as a pumpkin family farm, this is the patch where they love their sometimes strange or unusual pumpkins so much that they actually name them. And with a pumpkin named Colossus, one can only imagine just how huge some of their pumpkins might be.  Open 2pm to 5pm on weekdays and 10am to 5pm on weekends in October, this patch is family owned and tended. With this year's organically grown crop including up to 3,000 pumpkins in three-dozen varieties, no wonder it’s in the news. Come check out some of their pumpkins named Ivan the Terrible, The Sultan of Ugly, or the Big Bad Wolf and Little Red Riding Hood and see what these fall favorites are all about. What will you name your pumpkin? For more information, visit Lavender Hill Pumpkins.

Pumpkin Station- Multiple Locations

Get ready to visit one or more of the Pumpkin Station's multiple locations if looking for a local hot spot to pumpkin shop in style. With free admission and parking in all convenient locations, there are more than enough reasons to stop on by and check out some of their pre-picked pumpkins.
