Top Ten Local Fitness Tips and Trends

Published : 3/30/2009 by Michelle Guerin

We love the sunny weather for outdoor festivals, breezy fashion, and rooftop nightlife. But when it comes down to it, the rise of the summer sun means it’s time to get into swimwear shape.

I’ll be the first to admit that it’s harder than you think to squeeze fitness into a busy lifestyle – especially when choosing between a rooftop pool party and hitting the gym on a Sunday afternoon. Yet I’ll also be quick to remind you of the many unique workouts our city has to offer. From brand new nightclub bootcamp straight from Hollywood to charitable yoga class on the beach and front row Padres game views from your treadmill, local fitness leaders are making it easier than ever to get in shape in San Diego.

Discover the top ten San Diego fitness tips and trends.

Barry’s Bootcamp – Hillcrest
The secret weapon workout of the Hollywood stars arrives in Hillcrest. Known for its fun and social setting, Barry’s Bootcamp clients enter a warmly lit “hip-hop dance club” as expert instructors lead them through an intense one-hour workout. The program delivers a power-packed dose of fat burning cardio work on state-of-the-art treadmills, intermingled with strength training and the most up-to-date fitness techniques in existence. It works for Jessica Alba and Jennifer Lopez in Los Angeles, and it will definitely work for you in San Diego. BarrysBootcamp.net (Hillcrest club pictured main)

FitnessWave San Diego – Kearny Mesa
Hydrostatic, or underwater, body fat testing is the newest, most accurate way to measure body fat that’s sweeping the fitness world. Recently made popular by NBC’s hit show “The Biggest Loser”, participants are fully-immersed in a tank of water while precise measurements are being taken. In just a few seconds, the specialized computer program obtains the most accurate calculation of your body fat percentage. FitnessWave is the exclusive location for hydrostatic body fat testing in San Diego. GetDunkedSD.com

FIT Athletic Club – East Village
This downtown gym creates and upgrades local fitness trends. While many frequent FIT during spring to catch a front seat view of the Padres game from an outdoor cycling class on the deck, or to relax poolside at the private urban oasis; locals also trust FIT for the latest in workout innovation. This year, FIT shares how the focus of gym workouts has shifted from training for the aesthetic sake of training to the benefits of functional training. There is a growing popularity in functional training, which helps prepare people for succeeding in everyday life. For example, lifting children up off the ground and carrying groceries up the stairs; these movements create abdominal stability for improved posture while sitting at a computer at work. Functional training prepares the body to handle everyday tasks while avoiding injury and is approached differently than training for aesthetic purposes. FitAthletic.com (pictured)

Great list for young, trendy, and fit adults...

I'd have to agree with many of the fitness trends on this list. I'm a member of VAVi Sport and Social Club...and I have to say as a young working professional this was a great place to tone up myself up while meeting some great young people like me!

Boot Camp for Dogs and Humans

Hey Michelle: Another good one is boot camp outdoors at Balboa Park or Mission Bay for humans and dogs! Now you can exercise with your best (furry) friend. Check it out at www.leashyourfitness.com. Great work out for people and lots of fun (with some obedience training) for dogs. Thanks!
