Torrey Pines Golf Course Hosts 2008 US Open in San Diego

Published : 5/19/2008 by Angella d’Avignon

All eyes will be on La Jolla's backswing as our modest beach town is host to the 2008 U.S. Open Golf Tournament for the very first time at Torrey Pines Golf Course starting June 19th.

An ever-growing city with a lush tropical setting and nearly perfect weather, San Diego is a city that flourishes with the spring and summer seasons, a moldable, blooming city, open to new ideas and lending itself to creative entrepreneurs.

Take PETCO Park as an example: Plans for the stadium literally elevated our sports culture to new heights making the San Diego Padres one of the most lucrative and enjoyable entertainment options. Now with help from a nation-renowned golf course designer, Torrey Pines is making the map.

Torrey Pines has both doubled in size and stature in the respective golf world. The newly San Diego U.S. Open granted Torrey Pines the host position when celebrated course designer Rees Jones completed a remodeling of the Torrey Pines' South Course, an endeavor that has been met with almost universal acclaim. The U.S. Open hasn't visited Southern California for sixty years, making San Diego a magnet city for epic sporting events such as this.

To prepare for the U.S. Open in San Diego, the South and North Course will remain closed to the public for rest of May with the South Course re-opening June 19th. The North course will reopen as a nine-hole course in July 2008, and the entire course will play as an 18-hole course in September 2008.

Hosting the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines will demonstrate to the worldwide golfing community that public golf courses can successfully host major events. On a lawn where both beginners and professionals play, the public golfer will be able to play Torrey Pines up to three and a half weeks before the U.S. Open and experience the course just as some of the best golfers in the world will during this rigorous event.

Looking forward to the US Open in San Diego

Indeed, Torrey Pines is going to show the golfing world what San Diego golf has to offer and especially that public golf courses can host golf majors.
