We sat down with Twilight stars Maggie Grace (Irina) and Mia Maestro (Carmen) for a sneak preview of Breaking Dawn: Part 2, the saga’s highly anticipated finale hitting theaters Friday, November 16.
The women of The Denali Coven dish on the finale’s surprising twist, share what it’s like working with it-couple Kristen and Rob, and introduce us to Part 2’s hot new vampire man. According to Grace and Maestro, it’s all about Team Garrett now -- a “vampiric rock star” played by newcomer Lee Pace.
Q: How does it feel to be a part of this monumental franchise?
Maggie: It’s a little surreal sometimes. There is such a passionate fan base. They’re amazing. It’s really just such a sweet community. I think that’s what has impressed me most. And especially the fan camps, they’re so fun. (pictured left)
Q: Any wild fan experiences?
Maggie: A couple. We did Comic-Con here in San Diego.
Mia: Comic-Con was lovely. It was my first time. And doing it with Twilight, it was just the ultimate experience. The fans had been camping forever, and some fans are camping right now for our premiere on November 16.
Q: For those who aren’t familiar, tell us about your character.
Maggie: Well I play Irina in the Denali Coven. Some may call her a traitor, but I call her tragically misunderstood. We are actually in the same coven, the same clan, in the mythology of the books. We live up in Alaska -- we are the vegan vampires.
Q: We hear there is a big twist coming up in Breaking Dawn: Part 2. Can you give us a preview?
Mia: We cannot give anything away; it’s going to be a big, big surprise. But I actually love the twist. I think it’s one of the best things about it. The movie is quite loyal to the book, so I think all the Twilighters are going to be happy about that. And the movie, to me, it’s the best one so far. It’s epic, there is so much action. You see Bella becoming this beautiful woman -- a mother, a vampire -- it’s really exciting. (pictured left)
Q: Your characters were introduced in Breaking Dawn: Part 1. Before you joined the family, were you a big Twilight fans? Did you read the books?
Maggie: Yes I did read the book. We didn’t have a script when we first started out, we just had the books. Certainly very aware of it; I don’t know how you can live in America and not be!
Q: But would you consider yourself a real Twihard, a cult follower?
Maggie: That would be a betrayal of my first love. I’m a Janeite -- the Jane Austin Society. So I can’t betray them so quickly.
Q: What team are you on – Edward or Jacob?
Maggie: Well we are actually cousins of the Cullen family, so we are sort of de facto Team Edward. But I’m also voting to start a new team – Team Garrett.
Mia: We love Lee [Pace]! He is one of the new vampires, playing Garrett. He’s just a lot of fun to be around.
Q: So Garrett is taking over in Breaking Dawn: Part 2?
Maggie: He’s like the vampiric rock star, the revolutionary war hero.
Mia: I would be Team Joe Anderson too, because Joe is pretty cute as well. Team Beard! All the scruffy, rock ‘n roll vampires.
Q: So we have to ask you, what was it like working with Rob and Kristen?
Maggie: It was great, they are super warm and welcoming. Good people.
Q: Was the cheating scandal a big shock to you?
