Unsilent Night: Caroling Takes an Electronic Turn

Published : 11/27/2007 by Craig Slike

Ready for yet another unconventional twist on a classic holiday tradition? Caroling takes an electronic turn this year as hundreds gather for a nighttime stroll through the Gaslamp Quarter on Saturday, December 15 at 7pm near the Gaslamp Trolley stop at 5th and Harbor.

Unsilent Night is a composition by Phil Kline that consists of an infinite number of boom-boxes, all playing ambient electronic versions of holiday music (sans the singing). Kline places the different parts of his composition on cassettes, CD's or MP3 files.

The four pieces (or voices) are distributed amongst all who show up or downloaded off his website (www.philkline.com). When the time is right, all participants simultaneously press play, effectively becoming a city block long stereo system. "When the cassettes start rolling, they blossom into a marvelously crafted symphony." The sounds mix together, blending into the intended whole.

As this is a free 45 minute audience participation event, the public is strongly encouraged to bring their own boom-boxes. Anyone can join as a performer (if you bring your own portable sound system) but listeners walking along with the event are welcome too, even kids. The organizers ask that you let them know what kind of player you have so they can be sure to have enough CDs or tapes. Meet at 6:40pm to receive music.

Unsilent night will also be participating in The North Park Toyland Parade, Saturday, December 8, at 11am, marching down University Avenue from Utah to 32nd Street.

Questions or to reserve music call 619-299-5371 or e-mail: rubble@trummerflora.com

Warning: check out the music online first- it's really nothing like traditional Christmas music, lots of bells and ethereal vocal sounds. Now, this aint your grandmother's caroling!
