Electro, hip-hop, bass and a little bit of smooth-rockin’ violin. The fleet that makes up Vokab Kompany is taking their eclectic sounds to rock the Belly Up Tavern, with the company of Pigeon John, Crush Effect, and resident DJ ManCat. Performing this Saturday, August 27th, the seven-piece band fuses a variety of instrumentals and MC flows to put on one hell of a show. I can say from personal experience, Vokab Kompany will be getting you off of your ass and into unabashed dance mode, this time in the northern nook of Solana Beach.
The high-energy performances by Vokab Kompany have been entrancing their dedicated following with catchy hooks and rhythm-based harmonic vocals, that has also lent them to successive studio work in songs with Killah Priest of the Wu Tang Clan to members of Cage the Elephant, and from Luckyiam of the Living Legends and Aplus of the Hieroglyphics.
Behind the Music: MC’s Robbie Gall and Matt Burke add vocal drive to the Vokab Kompany distinctive sound, Geoff Nigl plays keys and guitar, Alvaro Nunez heats up the drums, Aaron Cheatham rocks bass, Spencer Sharpe on violin, Karen Mills for additional vocals, and Jesse Malloy with the sweet saxophone. The band most recently won the San Diego Music Award for Best Hip Hop Act in 2011. In 2010, their record New Kong won best hip-hop at the 2010 SDMAs. Much of the notoriety surrounding them comes from their anything-but-tame shows, which incorporate other performers such as stilt walkers, burlesque dancers, clowns, hoola-hoopers, guest musicians and an occasional belly dancer or two.
The music remains fresh and innovative with the 2011 album Quit Sleep featuring cameos from guitarist Lincoln Parish of Cage the Elephant, A-Plus of Hieroglyphics, Luckyiam from Living Legends, Signal Path, Solovox, Dj Vadim, Random Rab, Freddy Machete, and production by local hero Mr. Ridley and MCs Deploi and Apaulo8. The band performs frequently around town, from Pacific Beach bars to rowdy club nights at Voyeur, and their upcoming Belly Up show is expectant of a large crowd.
Belly Up Tavern has a long-standing history in Solana Beach that draws international acclaim, continually voted San Diego’s Best Live Music Venue. Other big band names passing through the Belly Up this month include the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Bushwalla. The Vokab Kompany concert is just $11, pre-sale tickets can be bought here or for $13 at the door. Download one of Vokab Kompany’s songs off the new album here.
