Between a chaotic schedule at work and addictive late night TV shows back home, it’s all too easy to numb our minds to the serious issues of homelessness in our city.
But what if the situation as well as the solutions of one successful initiative was broadcasted to you on TV, commercial free? “Finding Our Way Home - One Community Solving Family Homelessness” is giving viewers and San Diego residents a chance to hear about what the North County Solutions for Change is accomplishing, and imparting some inspiration for what each person can do. Channel 6 San Diego, the CW, will air the documentary on December 12th at 10:30pm, December 19th at 6:30pm, and December 26th at 7:00pm.
The drastic amount of homeless families in San Diego has continued to rise and challenge the city to search for solutions. Founded in 1999, the North County Solutions for Change situated itself as a driven social purpose enterprise, established for the sole purpose of solving family homelessness. Developed around a specific model called the “Solutions University,” the organization is run by social entrepreneurs, perseverant in their aim to engage both the families and surrounding communities in a solution to homelessness. And they don’t take this goal lightly. Within its first decade of existence, Solutions for Change have helped over 550 homeless families move into good homes, attain jobs, and live within the resources for maintaining a stable and healthy home.
The documentary will trace the paths of some of the people moving through “Solutions University,” the 1000-day program that aims to shelter, feed, and set the families up for success. Uninterrupted 30 minutes of footage invites viewers to understand the efforts of the Solutions University program and the “Finding Our Way Home” initiative, which plans on doubling the size of the university in order to lead 200 families out of homelessness, rebuilding lives for 400 children in the next 1000 days. You’ll hear about the distinctive partnerships of Solutions for Change, local companies and their CEOs, and a wide range of community members as they begin to see optimistically about what many consider an unsolvable problem.
"The documentary presents a program that we've pioneered here in North County, but which we believe can be a model for locally-adapted programs everywhere in the country," Solutions for Change president Chris Megison said. "We believe that someday there will be a Solutions University in cities nationwide, and that homelessness will no longer be a threat to one in every fifty children."
The “Finding Our Way Home” initiative launched in April of this year, a momentous proposal further pushing the cause by equipping parents with the skills, knowledge and resources needed to solve homelessness permanently. Community partnerships have been formed with the public and private sectors, engaging fourteen leaders to serve on a regional leadership team.
