North Park Seeks Local Artists

Published : 3/5/2008 by DiscoverSD

San Diego artists, if you've been looking for a chance to get your art to a bigger audience, now may be your chance.

The North Park Business District is requesting artist submissions for original artwork to be displayed on the North Park Parking Garage at North Park Way and 30th Street in North Park. The art will be displayed in the form of two dimensional banners on the garage itself.

The garage was built as part of the restoration of the North Park Theatre (now the Stephen and Mary Birch Theater), and in keeping with its goal of supporting the local arts and culture, the North Park Business District, paired with the San Diego Redevelopment Agency and other City and County groups, is asking to applications from professional artists in San Diego who may be selected to design artwork for the garage.

Artists who have their work selected will have a banner showing a digital photograph representation of their art displayed on one of the garage's fourteen display areas and will have their original artwork publicly auctioned by North Park Main Street. The artist will receive 50% of the sale price and the remaining proceeds will to the North Park Main Street Business Improvement District.

To compete for one of the garage's fourteen display spots, artist submissions must include a professional resume, a letter of interest, an annotated image list of past works paired with a CD of the digital pieces and other proof of their artistic backgrounds. Entries will be submitted to North Park Main Street by April 1, 2008 and must include a $20 non-refundable fee.

Finalists will be asked to participate in a round of interviews based on the content of their original submissions. The selected artists will be offered contracts to develop art specifically for the garage and must coordinate their work with the North Park Main Street staff, the design team and the Redevelopment Agency staff. All commissioned art pieces will need to be between 2 and 8 feet and must be able to be digitally reproduced.
