There are two
sides to every story. Like whether or not alcohol should be banned on
Pacific and Mission Beaches — there are those who believe it is
harmless, who enjoy nothing more than an ice cold Corona alongside a
beachfront game of horseshoes. Then there are those who recognize
that excessive alcohol has caused countless problems in the area,
disturbing residents and visitors both.
This year, the
annual Pacific Beach Block Party was cancelled due to alcohol-related
concerns, a measure that ignited the anger of many locals who have
patronized the festival year after year. Just this month, the Pacific
Beach Town Council voted to officially ask the San Diego City Council
to consider an alcohol ban on all city beaches and at Mission Bay
Park.
Such procedures
might seem extreme. However, the PB Town Council’s President, Don
Mullen, recently told the Union Tribune that “he himself is
suggesting that the City Council pass a resolution giving Pacific
Beach a designation that recognizes the area has problems with
drinking and disturbances. Such
a designation, he said, might allow the council to pursue grants that
could pay for more police, especially during summer, or allow it to
double fines for citations involving alcohol.”
There’s a plan that might please both
parties.
