Pacific Beach: To Drink or Not to Drink

Published : 8/17/2006 by Kirsten Noelle Hubbard

There are two sides to every story. Like whether or not alcohol should be banned on Pacific and Mission Beaches — there are those who believe it is harmless, who enjoy nothing more than an ice cold Corona alongside a beachfront game of horseshoes. Then there are those who recognize that excessive alcohol has caused countless problems in the area, disturbing residents and visitors both.

This year, the annual Pacific Beach Block Party was cancelled due to alcohol-related concerns, a measure that ignited the anger of many locals who have patronized the festival year after year. Just this month, the Pacific Beach Town Council voted to officially ask the San Diego City Council to consider an alcohol ban on all city beaches and at Mission Bay Park.

Such procedures might seem extreme. However, the PB Town Council’s President, Don Mullen, recently told the Union Tribune that “he himself is suggesting that the City Council pass a resolution giving Pacific Beach a designation that recognizes the area has problems with drinking and disturbances. Such a designation, he said, might allow the council to pursue grants that could pay for more police, especially during summer, or allow it to double fines for citations involving alcohol.”

There’s a plan that might please both parties.

Corona

That better be a CANNED ice cold Corona!!! Glass cuts my feet and is not allowed!

Simple solution

In the recent election San Diego ruled to ban alcohol on the beach. I was one of those individuals who felt this was a good Idea. Now that time has passed I have come to realize that it was a huge mistake. Here is why, the economy in Pacific Beach has taken a HUGE hit. Business close to the beach that once flourished are now shutting there doors.Because of the lack of beach goers. The value of homes has drastically dropped (Young people do not have a want to live here pay rent). Here is my solution! 1) Create designated beach areas where people can drink. (This will make it easier for Police to control) 2) In order to drink individuals must purchase a yearly beach beer card ($50) Which has picture). They must have card on at all times if they are in the designated area drinking. You can also buy a daily pass which cost $10. 3)If individual does not have card on them they will pay a hefty fine $1000. I think this will please everyone! Residence in the area will be happy because they know drinking is done responsible. Police can be happy because they can keep an easy control on beach goers. Beer drinkers can be happy because now everyone has a place to enjoy the beach. Not just families. Let me know what you think, Also how could I present this?
