Look outside. It’s a beautiful day
for a picnic, isn’t it? Raid the fridge, fix some sandwiches, grab
a blanket, and head out to Cabrillo National Monument in Point Loma,
home of the most dramatic bay and harbor view in all of San Diego.
Established in 1913, the monument commemorates Juan Rodríguez
Cabrillo's voyage of discovery. The Pacific Ocean, the Cuyamaca
mountains, and the supine hump of Mexico can all be seen from the
scenic national park. What a way to work up an appetite!
Often, pods of Pacific Gray Whales pass
through the waters in the winter, to the joy of sea-loving witnesses.
Visitors also enjoy hiking through the lively tide pools that develop
nearby at low tide, filled with anemones, starfish, barnacles, crabs,
and many more elusive creatures. Ranger walks are frequent, and a
slide program is shown daily at the park visitor center.
