San Diego's University Heights is a beautiful neighborhood. It's home to El Zarape (the most advanced Taco Shop in San Diego), Lancers (a San Diego bar where you can go up to the bartender, tell him you're about to have an awkward conversation with your ex-girlfriend, and then receive a non-verbal response in the form of a free glass of whiskey), and Bourbon St. (the best gay bingo parlor east of Hillcrest).
I know because I live there. But while we're on the subject, I feel that I have to warn people about the corner of Park Blvd and Adams Ave on the night of Halloween.
The only downside of living in University Heights is that I share my backyard with a pack of teenagers. All they do is curse, spit, chase each other around with WD-40 cans and lighters, argue about Led Zeppelin Albums, and brag about getting trashed on Mike's Hard Lemonade. Last week during the San Diego fires, they all had nothing to do, so they sat next to my window and plotted out how they were going to make a killing this Halloween by stealing bags of candy from little kids.
They weren't concerned with the city that was burning around them; they cared about developing a strategy that would produce the most Snickers bars opposed to "wussy" fruit-flavored hard candy, after jumping little kids by the swings at the end of Park Blvd. These acne-riddled psychopaths are evil. Plus, they are completely wrong about Zeppelin 4. They're destined to be CEO's of multinational corporations. More importantly, these same guys live in every neighborhood in San Diego and they always will.
Be safe this Halloween, have fun, and if someone tries to take your kid's bag, let them have it. Someday they will realize how lame they were - probably be from prison.
