Rancho Santa Fe
is home to one of San Diego’s most altruistic organizations: the
Helen Woodward Animal Center. Located on twelve rolling acres,
the center benefits the community by providing educational and
therapeutic programs for people, and humane care and adoption for
animals. The facility includes adoption kennels, stables and an arena
for the Therapeutic Riding program, a pet boarding facility,
small-animal and equine hospitals, classrooms, and more.
Because the
Helen Woodward Animal Center receives no government funding, they
must rely on tax-deductible contributions from private donors. The
center also devises wonderfully innovative fundraising methods, such
as the upcoming Surf Dog Surf-a-Thon on September 17th.
Held in Del Mar, Participants (humans) estimate how many waves they
can catch in an hour, accumulating donations from family and friends.
There will also be booths, games, plenty of sunshine, a dog surfing
contest, and a “Beach Bum and Bikini Babe” canine costume contest
for your more glamorous companions.
