From an action-packed weekend of sky-high entertainment to driving debates and tributes to the great writer of “Green Eggs and Ham,” San Diego’s picturesque island community is teeming with excitement. Let’s see who said what about recent
Coronado news and events.
Because It Gives You Wings: It’s that time of year again folks! The 2009 Red Bull Air Races are here in America’s Finest City this weekend. Rock Out: Get ready for a summer of fun in the heart of Coronado. Join family and friends on
Sunday nights at Spreckels Park for one of the best summer concert series in San Diego. Kicking off on Sunday, May 24 at 6pm, the series goes all the way through mid-September featuring a variety of jazz and community bands from San Diego.
Perplexed: The new roundabout at Pomona and Seventh has been causing quite the controversy in Coronado. Many residents are claiming that the crosswalks are confusing, leading up to curbs and blocked off driveways. On the other hand, supporters of the roundabout argue that the roundabout is a valuable tool in reducing speed. The city council has put the roundabout on a six month trial period and will decide in September whether or not to make it permanent.
Tick tock.
The Cat in the Hat: On April 22 the Hotel Del Coronado unveiled the Dr. Seuss touring sculpture garden on the Windsor Lawn. Hotel general manager Todd Shallan, Mayor Casey Tanaka and Bill Dreyer, curator of the
Dr. Seuss art collection, discussed conservation and environmentalism with dozens of elementary school children and concluded with a reading of Seuss’ “The Lorax.” Dreyer believes this new exhibit garden will allow the public to interact with the art of Dr. Seuss in a new and exciting way. Check it out at the Hotel Del before May 20.
VIP: On Friday, May 1, Keith Clough, Naval Base Coronado Sailor of the Year and Master-At-Arms 1st Class, became the first active duty service member to take a VIP flight in one of the Red Bull airplanes. The 12 year Navy veteran was one of two local service members granted the exclusive opportunity to fly in the one of the racing planes. That’s rockstar status right
there.
Toll Tax: Coronado city officials have been mulling over the possibility of re-instituting tolls on the Coronado Bridge in order to alleviate the city’s traffic problem. The analysis released last month stated that if $1.50 toll was implemented each direction, the city would be able to raise an additional $140 million over a four-year period. Good, bad or otherwise?
