Who Said What: Hillcrest News in Review

Published : 4/28/2009 by Ryan Eisenacher

Best know for its thriving LGBT community, eclectic crowd and the myriad of international restaurants, interesting nightlife and unique boutiques, it’s easy to see how Hillcrest is dubbed as one of San Diego’s most culturally diverse neighborhoods. Let’s see who said what about recent Hillcrest news and upcoming events this week.

LGBT News: San Diego blogger, Mike Tidmus, discusses how the military’s Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy has adversely affected San Diego’s gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community. The Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN), American Veterans for Equal Rights (AVER), veterans and civilians are urging the San Diego City Council to pass a resolution declaring that San Diego citizens support the repeal of the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” Support the cause for
equality.

Dining for a Cause: This Thursday, April 30, support The Center by partaking in Dining Out for Life festivities. More than 80 restaurants, bars, coffeehouses and nightclubs in San Diego will donate a minimum of 25 percent of their sales to The Center’s HIV/AIDS services and prevention programs. Whether it be breakfast, dinner, coffee or cocktails, help support the fight against AIDS. Find the guide of participants and more information
here.

SAME: Join the San Diego Alliance for Marriage Equality organization at the First Unitarian Universal Church in Hillcrest at 6 pm tonight to fight for LGBT marriage equality. The agenda tonight includes issues such as: Planning for ‘Day of and Day After Decision’ Actions, discussion and formation of ongoing committees and the LGBT Pride Torch Relay
event.

Happy Hour: Join DiscoverSD.com this Thursday, April 30th from 6-8 pm for a special Happy Hour event at the MerK. In honor of Dining Out for Life, a portion of the proceeds will benefit The Center’s HIV/AIDS services and prevention programs. Come party with DiscoverSD.com for great food, drinks and music. Find out how to RSVP
here.

Hot Flash: As a social venue for lesbians 35 and beyond, Hot Flash dance parties are a great way to connect with new people, find new friends and make alliances, providing a sense of community in the Hillcrest neighborhood. Check out The Flame on the first Saturday of each month to partake in the fun.

Tuesday Treats: Even though we all might be on a budget with the recession on our hands, Hillcrest businesses have teemed up to bring us some fun this spring without having to empty our wallets. Tuesday Nite Out encourages locals to get out and enjoy the mid-week with discounts on food, fro-yo, wine and clothes. Get the digs
here.

Get Ready: Hillcrest is already talking about this summer’s CityFest 2009 on Sunday, August 9th. Join locals in celebrating the silver anniversary of the lighting of the Hillcrest sign for a street festival filled with artwork, jewelry, food, drinks and a spectacular Lantern Parade. Don’t miss
it! (Pictured)

Breakfast Time: Join The Center on Friday, May 22nd as the San Diego LGBT Community hosts the First Annual Harvey Milk Diversity Breakfast. The event takes place on the birthday of Harvey Milk and seeks to bring together all locals who support equality and justice. All proceeds will benefit the San Diego LGBT Community Center. Find out more
here.

Furniture shopping

Buyer beware- don't special order anything at Legends Furniture store. They put PINK trim on my order for an all WHITE couch. The fabric was wrinkled and there were big gapes between the cushions. They refused to refund the $3,000!!!
