Who Said What: La Jolla News in Review

Published : 4/16/2009 by Ryan Eisenacher

From upscale dining and chic boutiques to picturesque scenes and pristine beaches, La Jolla is the seafront gem of San Diego. Let’s get the skinny on who said what in this week’s La Jolla news in review.

Bon Appétit!: Need more than Food Network these days? The La Jolla Light dishes about “Taste the Joy of Caring,” an event to benefit Mama’s Kitchen on May 8 at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla. You’ll get your dose of celeb cooking. The event features “Top Chef” contestants Brian Malarkey and Richard Sweeney as well as Sam “The Cooking Guy” Zien - yumm.

Boogie: The 10th annual FUSION Hip-Hop Dance Competition hosted by UCSD’s Multi-Asian Student Union and San Diego’s 220 Second to None dance team will be held at the UCSD RIMAC Area at 6 pm on Sunday, April 19. This year’s theme: “Creative Rebellion” gives teams across the country the opportunity to perform hip hop dances in one of three categories: competitive, exhibition or cultural exhibition. Get tickets before it’s too late.

Wine-O: Start gearing up for Rhythm and Vine from 6 to 9 pm on Saturday, April 25 located at the Westfield North County mall. According to San Diego Wine Guy, Mark Staurt, the festival hosted by the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego will feature over 70 different specialty food, wine, spirits and beer vendors alongside music from The Classic Jazz Trio, Crossroads, and Diamond is Forever! The Neil Diamond Experience.

Drama: The La Jolla Playhouse announced that Moxie Theatre will be the resident theater company for 2009 and 2010. As the second year of the Playhouse’s Resident Theater Program, artistic director, Christopher Ashley, hopes to promote the inventive and creative development of up-and-coming theater companies.

Debate: Support our seals! On Tuesday, April 14, a state Senate committee voted on a bill to modify the 1931 Tidelands Grant to include “marine mammal park for the enjoyment and educational benefit of children.” If passed, the bill will help to provide more protection for the harbor seals at Casa Beach. Park It!: The La Jolla Community Planning Association recently discussed the implementation of a “rainbow curb” plan. The proposal would add 64 parking spaces around La Jolla village, mostly by eliminating unneeded commercial loading zones and some bus stops, reducing red curbs and changing curb times.

Artsy: As of Friday, April 3, 15 La Jolla art galleries have opened their doors to the public for La Jolla First Friday Art Walk. Created in an effort to bring locals and tourists into the village, the event will be hosted on the first Friday of each month where patrons will get to view artwork, listen to music and enjoy refreshments.

Delish: Love the tasty Mexican fare you can get for cheap in San Diego? Dining critics, Kevin Leap and Steven Persitza, dished about the humungous carne asada burritos, shredded chicken quesadillas and homemade tamales at Porkyland in La Jolla. Dig in.

Health Kick: On Saturday, April 18 from 11 am to 3 pm the La Jolla YMCA will be hosting the 18th Annual YMCA Healthy Kids Day. Join in the fun and help promote healthy living by bringing your children to the Westfield UTC shopping center where they will be able to participate in games, sports, gymnastics and dance.

Bird: Rock, that is. La Jolla’s small neighborhood community had a council meeting last week to discuss future plans for Bird Rock’s very own Farmer’s market. Anne McBee, market co-chairwoman, hopes to gear the market to the Bird Rock community and make it an intimate event on Fridays from 3 to 7 pm. Keep a look out.
