Who Said What: More Pacific Beach News in Review

Published : 6/3/2009 by Vicki Hoang

With summer approaching, Pacific Beach continues to live up to its unpredictable and electrifying reputation. From opening a medical marijuana dispensary to finally solving a murder mystery and discovering the origin of the infamous PB douchebag, Pacific Beach continues to bring us San Diego news stories we can’t find anywhere else. Let’s find out who said what in this week’s Pacific Beach news in review.

Sticky icky: We thought we smelled somethin’ sticky in PB… Apparently, not even the U.S. Supreme Court could stop Pacific Beach from opening Pacific Beach Collective, a new medical marijuana dispensary located in north PB on Turquoise St. According to NBC, community members are hoping people would understand the store as: “the lesser of two evils when it’s [medically] necessary,” but many parents are still fighting to get it out of their backyard. Boardwalk aflame: Pacific Beach continues to ignite something new in the PB scene with The Fire Lane—a team of acrobatic fire-breathing beach performers, says SD News. The Fire Lane will be lighting up the shores of Pacific Beach Thursdays through Sundays after the sun sets outside of World Famous restaurant. Catch the fire before it gets put out.

Coastal bites: People got a mouthwatering taste Pacific Beach during the Coast of Pacific Beach Restaurant Walk on Tuesday June 2nd. Leisurely strolling along the Pacific Ocean and sampling the best of coastal cuisine all while helping to keep the neighborhood clean.

PB douchebags: We’ve all had our experiences with ‘em. But have you ever stopped to wonder where in the world they came from? SD Headliner unveils the discovery a Pacific Beach image that provides historical relevance to the emergence of the “douchebag” species. Awesome

Hand-y man: The handyman of Casa del Sur in Pacific Beach turned out to truly be a handy man as he was caught by surveillance entering a woman’s apartment with his master key not for maintenance, but to use her computer to visit pornography sites and unfortunately, enjoy himself. According to NBC, he was sentenced to a year in the county jail with credit for time served, and three years probation. Whew

Booty: Beach- goers will get the ultimate booty during the pirate-themed, 4th Annual Pacific Beach Scavenger Hunt on June 20. With twenty-five tasks that involve alcohol, entertainment, and food, those up for the challenge will definitely discover the treasures of this hunt

Insider Tip: Take your scavenger hunt to the next level with City Chase – the ultimate urban adventure race, also on June 20. Get $15 off registration with “DSD” promo code! Details.

Decades later: A 1971 unsolved Pacific Beach murder of a gay resident is going to trial on September 3rd, thanks to the help of 21st-century technology and the keen eye of an intern for the San Diego Police Department’s Homocide Cold Case Team. The Reader tells us the defendant, who admitted to the murder three and a half decades ago, will be facing a maximum sentence of 25 years to life if found guilty. Amazing work!

PB news brief: Campland dog park opens, new city sinfonia performs on the bay, symphony seeks budding musicians, PB choir plans a cheery concert at USD, and the Pacific Beach Town Council seeks donations of goods and services for its eighth annual Wine Tasting and Silent Auction event that benefits the Pacific Beach community and youth, to be held on June 14, says SD News. Recap!

Water, water everywhere… Although many can see the ocean from their living rooms, Pacific Beach residents will have to watch their water usage beginning June 1st. SD News shares that after a ten-percent reduction to water supplies in the city of San Diego, a new restriction system has been implemented for outdoor watering, depending on residential address and residences. Water water everywhere, and not a drop to drink…

Mo money, mo problems! Local Pacific Beach business Leilani’s Café was swindled out of its services despite being a cash-only business. Owner Leilani was surprised to discover that the fifty a customer used to pay for a bill was actually a five. KFMB says she sure learned her lesson, and now implements a new business policy: no five or hundred-dollar bills accepted
