While Old Town may be considered—well, old, when compared to the social scenes of La Jolla and Gaslamp, there is much going on every week in this quaint town. Despite its age and name, Old Town continues to bring the latest in San Diego news from its historical setting. From the introduction of John August Swanson’s new masterpiece “The Last Supper” to an apartment fire and a hoax bomb detonation, Old Town is keeping busy. The New Last Supper: Religious-themed artist, John August Swanson, will be bringing his latest piece entitled, “The Last Supper” to The Gallery at the Bazaar del Mundo Shops of Old Town. Named in the first annual International Mother Teresa Awards amongst others such as President Jimmy Carther, you wouldn’t want to miss the showcase of this unique man’s work. Miso Harney for New Chef: Our favorite fish-out-of-water sushi restaurant in Old Town – Harney Sushi –just welcomed new Executive Chef Anthony Sinsay. Although he will be stationed at the Oceanside location, Sinsay’s new menu will be served at this Old Town staple, featuring such new rolls as Rastatori and Mellow Yellow. Get details here.
The Roof is on Fire: Old Town had quite the scare when San Diego firefighters arrived early in the morning to help put out an apartment fire. According to NBC San Diego, firefighters arrived before 7am and found three people in need of medical help from smoke inhalation. Police arrived to the scene as well, to help direct traffic and evacuate other residents of the building.
Have No Fear, Mexican Café is Still Here: Old Town Mexican Café, one of San Diego’s most treasured authentic Mexican eateries, was recently sold and purchased for $4 million, according to The Daily Transcript. However, there’s no need for loyal customers of the long-standing establishment to fret; Mexican Café will continue to operate from the same location.
Old-School Taste: Old Town is re-introducing the old school flavors of San Diego during its “Stagecoach Days” Sunday culinary celebration of San Diego’s food heritage. The event, to be held on June 28th from 1:00 to 5:00pm will benefit Slow Food Urban San Diego, Old Town San Diego State Historic Park, and California State Parks. For $45, event-goers will get a sample from over 20 restaurants, artesian food makers, breweries, and wineries all honoring early food traditions.
Don’t Say “Bomb”: San Diegans got a scare as a black briefcase with wires hanging out was found under Pacific Highway’s overpass over Friars Road and the San Diego River. According to CBS, the structure where the bomb was found is nearly 80 years old and formerly carried US 101 between Old Town. The hoax “bomb” was “rendered safe” with the help of a robot, and all San Diego Trolleys and roads resumed routine service.
Party Like its 1800: Old Town is bringing an 1800s vibe to your 2009 Fourth of July festivities. Pie eating contests, sack races, flag raising events, 1800s music and dance, a cake walk, popcorn and lemonade are just a few of the really old school activities that will take place in the Old Town San Diego State Historic Park. With free admission, food, fun, and prizes, this Old Town summer celebration is definitely worth a try.
