During spring and summer seasons, our local radar is glued to the unpredictable city of Pacific Beach. From disappointing spring break feedback to potential elementary school lawsuits and more PB parking drama as the result of delayed condo construction, the community news in Pacific Beach never lets us down. Let’s find out who said what in this week’s Pacific Beach news in review.
Yawn: Pacific Beach is the go-to town for ridiculously wild and cheap spring break trips in San Diego. However, KFMB-TV San Diego says 2009 Spring Break visitors were well-behaved in Pacific Beach, according to local police. A well-behaved Spring Break in Pacific Beach? Hey thanks, beach ban. Yawn.
Bummer: I bet some LA party-goers were a bit disappointed when they arrived in PB this spring without wild herds of fellow Speak Breakers by their side. The LA Times named San Diego one of the best Spring Break destinations this year, name-dropping some of our best communities including Pacific Beach, encouraging the eco-conscious staycation trend. Lawsuit: Pacific Beach Elementary will have to share a principal with another small elementary school of less than 500 children if the new plan is adopted by the San Diego Unified School District, according to Beach and Bay Press. Local parents say schools without principals are lawsuits waiting to happen.
Experience: One of the trendiest charity organizations in the world – we’re pretty sure – Stay Classy hosts the majority of their San Diego charity events in Pacific Beach. You don't want to miss the Elemental Experience at Mission Bay Park on May 2nd. Find out why.
Plan: A new source for efficient partying in Pacific Beach, Out in PB, shares some of the best specials for drinks and bites around town this week. Did anyone know World Famous has $1 shrimp tacos for Taco Tuesday? Pretty sweet deal served with an ocean view.
Play: The sense of reason in a party town – PacificBeach.org – hosts many family-friendly events each year, many for a charitable cause. Coming up on May 10 is the Charity Bocce Ball Tournament. Do your part and join Pacific Beach business owners and community leaders at Kate Sessions Park on May 9th.
Parking: The city approved an 18-unit condo complex on the corner of Pacific Beach Drive and Mission Boulevard in 2006, but now the PB Planning Group believes the parking spaces violate city code. Beach and Bay Press wonders, will the condo development finish?
Yum: It’s honestly kind of ridiculous how many locals worship the burgers at Rocky’s in Crown Point. Breaking the boundary of local press, Rocky’s burger made a big(ger) headline on Serious Eats. This blogger gets romantic about his Rocky’s experience.
Surf: Known as one of the best surf spots in San Diego, Pacific Beach is always on the national radar for weather, tide and wind updates. Surfline keeps you updated on the PB surf status.
Beach Cam: If you’re more focused on what’s happening on the sand, rather than the wind and water. Check out the live beach cam in PB thanks to the Beach Cottages on the boardwalk.
Regulate: Pacific Beach blogger Jerry Hall is frustrated with the way an alcohol-fueled lifestyle corrupts PB culture. He focuses on crime, safety and alcohol issues in Pacific Beach. Learn about problems and brainstorm ideas for solutions.
Examine: A few locals share their PB perspectives on Examiner. Recently, they were focusing on all the important things, such as cheap massages and solid advice: “Remember to stash the pot when home is on fire.” Keep up with the local mindset.
