Who Said What: Point Loma News in Review

Published : 6/10/2009 by Vicki Hoang

Seemingly a peaceful neighborhood in San Diego, Point Loma has got a lot going on within its peninsula boundaries. From potential barbeque bans in Ocean Beach to a new local language and uncovering a local murder, we’ve got the latest on what’s going down in Point Loma. Discover who said what in this week’s Point Loma news in review.

Beachy Business: Will Ocean Beach ban its shoreline barbeques? Sounds like they just might after a dumpster in the parking lot at the end of Brighton Avenue caught fire May 23rd, according to Casey Bollier of the San Diego Reader. The smoky seaside mayhem was the result of a careless man’s decision to empty the coals of his barbeque pit into the dumpster. Firefighters claim that this happens too often, and we claim that this carelessness has got to stop—or we can kiss our weekly summer barbeques at Ocean Beach goodbye.

Slow Down, San Diego: The notorious curve along Rosecrans Street has caused quite the controversy with multiple crashes occurring on its pavements over the years—one of which involved the death of a driver in a local resident’s driveway, according to the San Diego Union Tribune. In an effort to prevent this from happening ever again, the San Diego Transportation Engineering Division will be implementing raised pavement markings and an electronic “your speed” sign as a traffic-slowing measure. Although the wait could be six months to a year, we’d take anything that would prevent any accidents from happening

From “Hola” to “Ni Hao”: China’s increasing influence upon the world has got San Diego switching from Spanish to Mandarin-Chinese as a second language. According to a recent survey, a large percentage of San Diego parents want their children to learn Chinese says NBC San Diego. Point Loma has answered request and stepped up to the plate—now giving the locals want they want at Barnard Elementary. Forty-five minutes a day, for four days a week, anyone can take Mandarin-Chinese classes at Barnard Elementary—for free. Xie xie, Barnard Elementary!

Point Loma’s Going Deep: A team of researchers are making an attempt to descend to the lowest point of the Earth with the unmanned, submersible Nereus says the San Diego Union Tribune. This submersion will allow scientists to study and become familiar with life on the ocean floor, and the forces which have created our continents. The mission could not be made possible without the help of Navy engineers in Point Loma, who developed super-strong ceramic coverings that would prevent Nereus from crumbling under staggering pressures. Patrolling our Waters: Twenty-two suspected illegal immigrants were captured by Federal Agents according to ABC. The vessel which brought the sixteen men and six women to the shores of North County was intercepted five miles west of Point Loma, while the two Mexican nationals in the boat were arrested with suspicion of human smuggling

A True Point-Loma Party: Payal Patel and Nikhil Warrier took the meaning of a traditional wedding to a whole new level during with a three-day, Indian-style wedding that involved several ceremonies, too many costume changes, and more than 1,000 guests at Patel’s parent’s Point Loma residence. According to the San Diego Union Tribune, despite growing up in America, the two young lovers wanted to bring their celebrate their wedding the right way—with an all-out Indian-traditional celebration mixed up with the laid-back environment of Point Loma.

Who Did It: An autopsy was scheduled for a 56-year old man found dead on a downtown Ocean Beach sidewalk, according to ABC. With a fatal stab wound which left transient Richard Swink for dead in front of the Ocean Beach Library, we’re eager to find out who was behind this Ocean Beach murder.
