Best San Diego Bars for Pre and Post Padres Game Partying

Published : 5/12/2008 by George Duenas Jr.

We don't care what you say - it's just not right to live in San Diego and not be a Padres fan.

From the rowdy fan spirit to the $9 thirst-quenching beers and the consequential trash-talk to opposing team fans, a spring or summer Padres game at PETCO Park is recipe for a wild time. However, no Padres game experience is complete without the mandatory pre and post-game parties. And there is no neighborhood better prepped for PETCO-friendly specials than the East Village.

San Diego's East Village is home to various bars and restaurants that range from upscale and relaxing to urban and action-packed. Whether you're looking to grab a beer and greasy appetizer pre-game, or searching for a posh place to settle after the game, you'll find your spot in the East Village.

The Tilted Kilt
The Tilted Kilt in San Diego is a lively take on the standard Irish and Scottish pub, and offers a full bar with 24 beers on tap and a variety of deliciously greasy appetizers. This new addition to East Village, conveniently located next to the Park, is (proudly) themed an Irish-style Hooters, and is known for charismatic servers sporting sexy kilts. If you're a rowdy Pads fan looking for a lively place, head here for some pre-game fun.
Insider Tip: Expect a big crowd and even a line around the door.

East Village Tavern and Bowl
The Tavern and Bowl is the urban sports bar reinvented with an action-packed itinerary. This massive venue offers a newly-increased lineup of bowling lanes, more than a dozen flat screens TVs, delicious food, and an assortment of beers. The Tavern and Bowl is even a fun alternative to the game (sorry PETCO, but it's true), as it's an experience all its own. But local fans flock for pre-game snacks from The Food Dude, and promptly return post-game for drinks and rounds of bowling.
Insider Tip: Everyone bowls better drunk.

BASIC
Before and after a Padres game, local fans choose this neighborhood bar and lounge to enjoy some superb pizzas and locally brewed beer. BASIC attracts an artsy following craving an under-the-radar vibe, and caters to these regulars with a straight-up menu and consistent lack of the typical belligerent tourist crowd.
Insider Tip: If you're headed to BASIC after the game, you'll (really) regret filling up on $25 Park hotdogs and nachos when you check out the affordable, huge pizzas served at the table next to you. We're exaggerating, but you get the point.

The Fleetwood
This top East Village restaurant realizes not all Padres fans are satisfied with greasy snacks. Head to The Fleetwood before the game for a reasonably priced fine dining experience, or head back to The Fleetwood after the game to ditch the obnoxious crowds and enjoy late night rounds of drinks and dancing. From the dining room to the dance floor and sports bar lounge - take me out to The Fleetwood this Padres season. (main photo)

Insider Tip: Listen up guys - The Fleetwood is the perfect balance for your Padres game date night. Skip all tilted kilts, and opt for the classier alternative. That is, unless you don't want to impress her.

Moonstone Lounge
Moonstone Lounge within the Hard Rock Hotel is, by far, the top choice for celebrating a Padres victory. Opt for bottle service at a fire pit VIP booth with sparkling downtown views. But, despite the final score, too many $9 beers at the game will dwindle your chances of enjoying your Moonstone experience. This scene is not for the faint at heart, but rather for patient Padres fans that crave the signature Gerber upscale ambiance at the post-game party.
Insider Tip: Plan ahead for all Friday home games and avoid Hard Rock door drama by getting on the SanDiegoClubs.com guest list here for Different Strokes Friday nights at Moonstone Lounge.
