Like any neighborhood in San Diego, Pacific Beach has its upsides and downsides.
Sometimes the college meat market vibe that exists in the majority of the clubs on Garnet Avenue can be overwhelming, but there is one treasure that can be found tucked away amongst the chaos.
If knowing you are destined to wait in long lines to watch frat boys get in fights while you are trying to enjoy a night out burns a fire within your soul, go to Tropicoso on a Friday night and release your tension on the dance floor.
Friday's Brazilian night at Tropicoso is a celebration of culture that only Latin America can provide. Sure, not everyone can samba (See: me after 5 or 6 Mojitos), but with price of admission ($10, but they are flexible), you can come early for free lessons taught by a sharp dressed hombre who will not let you fail.
As the night goes on, the room gets hotter and sweatier, but for some reason you won't mind like in other crowded places in Pacific Beach. The heat comes from the dance floor, and if you can keep up, it can be a very rewarding night out.
Insider tip: Don't be alarmed if you see smoke, they have not outgrown the fog machine façade.
