There’s a unique splendor to Spain that conveys years of history, spirit, and liveliness, apparent through their many customs ranging from the sacredness of collective meals to late-nights of endless celebration. I fell in love with it myself a few years ago, and it’s still irresistible for anyone looking to get a taste of Spain.
Café Sevilla, in the heart of Gaslamp, unleashes an array of Spanish life to San Diego, between their tapas bar, authentic Spanish cuisine, and the European nightclub. The center of Sevilla’s entertainment, however, comes through in the weekly Art of Flamenco Dinner Show. The new way to do Friday date night welcomes in couples to enjoy a three-course dinner for two, a bottle of wine and two-hours of a live Flamenco performance.
The Art of Flamenco Show warms up the intimate atmosphere of Sevilla, as guests are entertained by an ever-changing group of Flamenco dancers, singers, percussionists and guitarists over plates of genuine Spanish cuisine. The ambiance gives the downtown nightlife scene a rich cultural cover laced throughout the show. Flamenco has been an integral part of Spanish culture for more than 500 years, as southern Spain brought the melancholy music of the gypsies influenced by the moors of North Africa into existence. As common in Spanish tradition, spontaneous outbreaks of Flamenco rely on guitars, drums, and the traditional dance steps to be carried by most every resident. The practice now serves as entertainment for fervent audiences, as women’s long skirts and set steps create a tantalizing world on the stage.
In suited accompaniment of the European elegance and Mediterranean spirit comes three courses of appetizing bites, showcasing some Café Sevilla specialties. The first course starts with an Ensalada Sevillana, tossed with balsamic vinaigrette, goat cheese, tomato and cucumber. The main course for the night is the infamous Paella Valenciana, made of mussels, clams, calamari, shrimp, scallops, chicken and grilled Spanish sausages in aromatic Saffron Bomba rice. For dessert, guests can indulge in Crema Catalana, an award-winning chocolate espresso crème brulee.
The Flamenco Dinner Show cost also includes nightclub cover, for an all-encompassing night of Spanish culture. Tax, tip and beverages are not included. Café Sevilla is located on 5th Avenue, fusing a trio of a tapas bar, Spanish restaurant, and high-energy nightclub. The Art of Flamenco Dance Show entertains couples every Friday from 7-9pm and on Saturdays, the Fusion Flamenco Show adds more energy to the weekend.
