Question: If a group of guys wants to sit among other similarly sports-obsessed guys, eat wings, and dull their worries by looking at scantily clad women whose job it is to bring them wings, where in San Diego do they go? (Besides Hooters.)
Answer: "This other Eden, demi-paradise, this precious stone set in the silver sea, this earth, this realm, this... Clairemont."
- William Shakespeare
Here are the of the greatest non big-chain sports bars in San Diego, all off Clairemont Mesa Blvd in Clairemont (south of La Jolla and Mira Mesa):
The Bullpen - East Clairemont
The Bullpen is all about comfort. When you lean back in the Bullpen's huge chairs, you'll forget your team is failing you. The screens are all around; everywhere you look, sports are beating the crowd into a state of ecstasy. The minute you sit down, you realize "it" is on and you know you know you don't want "it" to be off, even if you don't know what "it" is.
Wing Factor- The main rule with wings: they can't taste like they've been frozen. I'm sad to say this is true with the wings at the Bullpen.
Skybox - Clairemont Town Square, West Clairemont
Skybox is the new kid on the block. It's the smallest of the three Clairemont sports bars, but it offers walls filled with TVs, the cheapest beer, and couches set up in the middle of the floor.
Wing Factor- The sauce is extremely tangy, and the chicken almost tastes like cheap orange chicken you find at express Chinese food restaurants. That might not be something you're into - but you're probably lying to yourself.
Players - East Clairemont
This is a Boston bar whenever a big Boston sports game is going on - which can be very annoying if you hate the East Coast for being spoiled with their perpetually high-quality teams. The bar is big, has tons of TVs, and a large amount of pool tables. The other great thing about Players: it's within walking distance to Boomers, which has batting cages that are extremely fun when you're too drunk to drive.
Wing Factor- Players offers 12 beautifully fried wings on top of a bed of fries. Also, Players waitresses understand wing culture more then most. The best hot wing advice I have received in my life has come from the staff at Players.
