Crudo, San Diego’s Most Stylish Sushi

Published : 8/17/2006 by admin admin

Little Italy’s new Crudo serves up sushi with a side of nightlife—though often, the other way around. It’s no surprise one of its proprietors is dance club bigwig Mike Viscuzo. The club definitely reflects his masterful touch: glossy, modern décor, dazzling light systems, and renowned DJs keeping things effervescent. Because Crudo is located in Little Italy, patrons are more likely to linger instead of club-hop, as they tend to do in the Gaslamp. However, the club’s qualities are overwhelmingly Gaslamp-esque, both the good and the bad, crowds and drink prices included.

Where rolls are concerned, it’s to be expected that Crudo ranks highly. Sashimi selections vary across the board, from Spanish mackerel to tuna belly. An assortment of soups, salads, bowls and entrees are also available, and each dish is expertly dolled up like a beautiful sculpture. Because Crudo is a little bit Japanese restaurant, a little bit rock and roll, both the sake and wine collections are admirably broad, as well as the selection of spirits. Thankfully, the bar hosts a nightly happy hour featuring $5 martinis, among other deals.

Nonsense

A group of friends and I went to Crudo Saturday night. Two of our friends started tabs and bought drinks for 4 of us. Half way through the night a bartender cut off our friend because she said he had too much to drink since there were 9 drinks on his tab even though most of the drinks he bought for other people (and she was the one to serve all of us a round of drinks on his tab prior to this). Also, the drinks were mediocre made by the female bartender. The male bartenders were polite and made good drinks, but the female bartender ruined our night. I thought this was nonsense and it pretty much ruined our night. We go out to many clubs each weekend and this was the worst treatment we’ve had. I would definitely suggest Belo over Crudo. We will never return to Crudo again.

Crudo

Besides the wierd name "crudo" its actually a very chic hangout. A friend and I went for the grand opening and enjoyed many delicious drinks while watching a fashion show. Cool crowd. Not too overpriced for downtown. Good music.

Crudo means Raw in Italian

so that's where the name idea came from. Sushi is raw, mostly, and the restaurant is smack-dab in Little Italy + is owned by Italians... there you have it. :-)
