Little Italy’s
new Crudo serves up sushi with a side of nightlife—though often,
the other way around. It’s no surprise one of its proprietors is
dance club bigwig Mike Viscuzo. The club definitely reflects his
masterful touch: glossy, modern décor, dazzling light systems,
and renowned DJs keeping things effervescent. Because Crudo is
located in Little Italy, patrons are more likely to linger instead of
club-hop, as they tend to do in the Gaslamp. However, the club’s
qualities are overwhelmingly Gaslamp-esque, both the good and the
bad, crowds and drink prices included.
Where rolls are
concerned, it’s to be expected that Crudo ranks highly. Sashimi
selections vary across the board, from Spanish mackerel to tuna
belly. An assortment of soups, salads, bowls and entrees are also
available, and each dish is expertly dolled up like a beautiful
sculpture. Because Crudo is a little bit Japanese restaurant, a
little bit rock and roll, both the sake and wine collections are
admirably broad, as well as the selection of spirits. Thankfully, the
bar hosts a nightly happy hour featuring $5 martinis, among other
deals.
