D Street Bar and Grill in Encinitas

Published : 3/3/2008 by Alexis Griffith

Known for its vintage shops, antique record stores and languorous attitude, the historic Highway 101 that runs through North County offers a great escape from the rest of the busy and frantic world.

Many of the local bars appear more like museums in their décor, with ghostly photos of the original buildings dating back to 1912. Yet, D Street Bar and Grill, or what used to be the old Martini Ranch, has updated its act, while still preserving some of that old 101 charm.

Still standing tall, next door to the La Paloma Theatre, a relic edifice built in 1928, D Street has managed to conserve the manifestation of that era with tall dark wood pillars and clean red brick walls. By surrounding the venue with dark leather booths, and multiple plasma televisions, D Street creates a casual and hospitable environment with modern magnetism - a great place for an early evening aperitif, or an afternoon beer best enjoyed with close companions.

If venturing out on a Friday or Saturday night, expect the consistent local crowd, as this is a place, as well as most of North County venues, that is known for its neighborly demographic. Although D Street is not really the place to put on your dancing shoes, it is definitely a hotspot for all you sports nuts out there. But whether you’re a local, or just simply passing through, D Street is a great place to relax, have a beer and put your feet up - and the happy hour is certainly not bad either.

Insider Tip: As a chicken wing connoisseur, D Street has by far some of the best wings I have ever had in all of San Diego County.
