Discover Nightlife: Top Ten Sports Bars for Transplants

Published : 9/9/2008 by Nick McCann

San Diego is a city full of love-struck transplants and proud and protective locals. And if there's one factor that will forever divide the faithful homegrown from the visiting it's sports.

While we natives will season-after-season support our Padres and Chargers, many new residents refuse to give up natural team ties. And because we know LT will carry the Bolts to the '09 Superbowl, we figure we'd test out good sportsmanship and find the best San Diego bars for the other fans. From Winston's to Hennesey's, discover the top ten San Diego sports bars for transplants.

Insider Warning: Dedicated local fans, you can kindly divert to the Top Ten Upscale San Diego Sports Bars.

Players Bar and Grill
Players in Clairemont is a Boston sports bar through and through. There is a huge collection of sports memorabilia lining the walls and always a large contingent of diehard Boston fans parking themselves for games. The Chargers/Patriots game coming up this season might get out of hand at Players.

Winston's
If you are a Washington Redskins fan, Winston's is the place for you. There will be cheap pizza, drink specials, and if you are lucky, a bunch of dudes dressed up like female pigs. If you understand that tradition, stop by this cozy bar in Ocean Beach.

Chiefs
Chiefs is a Denver Broncos bar. I'm sure you are wondering why a Bronco bar would have the same name as another team in the NFL division. But never mind the name. they have the best chicken strips in the county. Also, it is right next to Solana Beach's premier music venue, the Belly Up Tavern.

McGregor's
When the University of Nebraska plays a home game in Lincoln, the city becomes - due to the influx of crazy red painted humans - the third largest city in the state. McGregor's in Mission Valley fills up with Cornhusker fans during games in the same way.

Australian Pub
Wisconsin sports fans love this bar. During Packers games, cheeseheads (wearing cheese on their heads) go crazy. This year the Packers are playing without Brett Farve; it could get really crazy at this Pacific Beach dive bar this fall.

The Tilted Stick
The Tilted Stick is small dive bar in OB that serves as a refuge for Philadelphia Eagles fans. Eagles fans once booed Santa Clause at a game. If you are not an Eagles fan, beware.

Rosie O Grady's
Rosie O Grady's is a great sports bar for everybody, but it is definitely a Chicago Bears bar at the core. The brunch at Rosie O Grady's is great for early games, and the drinks are always cheap and stiff.

Hennessy's Downtown/Gaslamp
Notre Dame football is struggling right now, but that doesn't mean the tradition of getting up early on Saturday to watch the Irish has to go away. Get there early because seats go quickly before Notre Dame runs out of the tunnel.

The Bullpen North (Encinitas)
The Bullpen North is for USC fans. The menu is great and the team usually stomps its opponents. I recommend the nachos!

The Local
The Local in the Gaslamp has a legendary happy hour. That said it is also a great place for people from Phoenix to go and watch their teams. The Cardinals haven't really been much to talk about lately, but this year could be different, and The Local is a great setting to watch a historic turnaround.

Dishonorable Mention: The Stargazer Club in Chula Vista, Bonavito's in El Cajon, and Casa Picante in Santee all host Oakland Raiders fans. I'm sure they are great for watching a horrible team. GO BOLTS!
