Cosmic Gate is a German trance DJ/producer duo made up of Nic and Bossi. They are touring North America in support of their fifth studio album, Wake Your Mind, and are spinning at Voyeur on Sunday, November 20th.
The guys describe their Cosmic Gate style as progressive electronic dance music with a trance touch, but they don’t really care how you label it as long as it moves you. Nic and Bossi aren’t getting comfortable in their routine, however. Cosmic Gate’s new album Wake Your Mind boasts their widest musical range to date, showcasing their expanding variety as producers. They are pushing themselves to break out of the “normal” nightclub beats, and in turn, taking our dance floor experience to a whole new level. This Sunday we can expect to hear hot new tracks off of Wake Your Mind mixed with classic club anthems. Nic and Bossi love Voyeur for the intimacy and energy, and they can’t wait to share the new Cosmic Gate sound with San Diego party people this weekend.
Get to know Nic and Bossi of Cosmic Gate in this week’s DJ Spotlight.
DSD: How did you two meet, and how did you begin mixing and producing music together?
Cosmic Gate: We were both around in the German music scene back in 1998 for a while already, and when we started releasing for the same music label, we ended up in a studio by chance together. There we did this fun jam session, this track we released few months later under a new project called Cosmic Gate! Back then we had no idea at all that this really totally chance production should change our lives that much, and we talk about it often that it is was a life changing point for us.
DSD: How does your artistic duo work? What are your individual strongest talents?
Cosmic Gate: Nic is playing the keyboard and creating the melodies when we do our productions. For the rest, for whatever work comes up, we do it together, share the work as much and as good as we can as a duo.
DSD: How do you classify your style of music?
Cosmic Gate: That’s a good question! We would call it progressive trance, but there are influences from more genres inside, and one track sure has different influences to another, especially on an album! Maybe the term Electronic Dance Music is very wide but could fit it as well, so EDM with a trance touch could be a good term too! But in the end, we do not really care how people call or see it. We hope our music touches the people and they simply enjoy and or dance to it.
DSD: Tell us all about your new album, Wake Your Mind. How is this album different from your previous projects?
Cosmic Gate: The biggest difference to the albums before, sure is the number of co-operations we did on here, specially for the first time also with other DJs/producers. This fact in our eyes led to the widest kind of range we musically ever offered on an album, and this is what we see what an album is for, to break a bit out of the “normal” sound that a regular club single has and to show our musical variety as producers.
DSD: What artists are featured on Wake Your Mind?
Cosmic Gate: We knew actually all the people we worked with before, so it was a project most between friends. The biggest issue always was the planning, as with all the touring we did, it was hard to coordinate working on songs at the same time. But in the end, we all managed and are more than happy with the result.
DSD: What new projects are you working on in the coming year?
Cosmic Gate: Well, honestly we have not thought of goals for a new album yet. This is really too early being in the first stage of the release of Wake Your Mind. We have some not finished [collaborations] still to come in 2012. We will do at least one mix CD, the touring of course continues, and finally we will start our own podcast and radio show. It will definitely not get boring for us! [laughs]
DSD: We can’t wait to party with you guys at Voyeur in San Diego on November 20th. What can we expect to experience during your show?
Cosmic Gate: Sure we will play a lot of new tracks from our album Wake Your Mind, mixed with some classics and the best of what is hot and new in clubland. That’s how the music most likely will be like.
DSD: What is your favorite part of performing at Voyeur? What stands out about the club and crowd?
Cosmic Gate: Voyeur is a small intimate place, and we like to be close to the crowd, feel the energy and party with the people there. It is always big fun and we are looking forward to coming back to San Diego already now.
DSD: What other big upcoming shows do you have this fall and winter, in San Diego and beyond?
Cosmic Gate: A few days after San Diego, on November 23rd we play at Exchange in Los Angeles, so it’ll be another very interesting show for Cali people, especially as we will bring Aruna and Jes with us to perform live! It’s something we are really looking forward to. For the rest, there is a lot going on, so best is to check on our tour dates on www.Cosmic-Gate.de
DSD: What are your hobbies and passions, outside the music industry?
Cosmic Gate: There is not a lot of time unfortunately for hobbies besides the job we do. We like sports and things, like millions of other people too, but we simply have no time for something to do on a regular basis besides all of our traveling during the last few years. We fortunately get to live our main passion, which is music, every day, and it’s keeping us happy!
