This elusive Gaslamp “speakeasy” exudes sophistication, luxury, and mystery in the comfort of its underground haven.
Unlike its bright-light neighbors with hostess turned negotiators and frowning 7ft. tall bouncers out front, the Gaslamps’s new speak-easy, Prohibition, is hidden away from the usual foot traffic. There are never lines out front to give away its location – the venue is guest list only, with very few exceptions. A password is given to patrons as a way of letting them know they are invited in for the evening, and keeping stray passer-bys out.
Upon entering Prohibition you are greeted by the host himself, Vin V: a bright-eyed young gent with a wide smile that sets the tone for the evening and Prohibition’s overall atmosphere. You enter down the stairs by following the red glow, cast down by steel caged lighting above, as Vin leads new friends and his regulars alike to their booths or tables, either introducing them to the lounge or starting them off with their usual cocktail right away.
The size of the lounge itself adds to the realism of the concept: The space stretches long across, allowing just enough room for cushy leather booth seating, belly bar seating, and mingling around the bar. The red lighting continues throughout the lounge with antique lamps affixed to the dark wood paneling that runs all the way throughout the interior. Hung along the walls are photographs of the iconic giants of the era: each and every one autographed by the star or starlet him or herself.
The real power of distinction for Prohibition, however, is your experience there through the music that truly reflects the era. Unlike other San Diego clubs where loud music seems to dominate over a need to keep conversation, the live jazz and bossa nova music set the mood for the subterranean lounge that advocates conversation among patrons just slightly below the music.
Every Thursday, Prohibition hosts a live musical performance by jazz vocalist David Patrone (twitter.com/davidpatrone), who just yesterday received the 2009 San Diego Music Award for best jazz. Patrone’s friendly demeanor, wide-range of vocals, and wicked attitude bring the Chicago underground vibe that suddenly makes mobsters sexy and each delicious cocktail a delightful taboo – worth every sinful sip...
Gimme that “Strong Water”—Staying true to their roots, like the cocktail phenomenon came about during the “dry” era, using juices and mixers to tone down the potent potions that were smuggled in, Prohibition also offers a delicious assortment of irresistible cocktails that turn both men and women alike into “criminals”.
The Jack Rose uses Lairds applejack, lemon, and a house made grenadine that packs a powerful yet just as justifiably sweet punch while the Blackberry Collins made with Belvedere Cytrus Vodka, Marie Brizard blackberry liquor, and fresh blackberries is sweet at first sip then tart on the finish. The Strawberry Branca however, is on a whole different level of flavor: Greygoose Pear is generously splashed on a fresh strawberry, stirred with a sprig of rosemary, and finished with a fernet-branca float to create an eclectic yet approachable concoction that (dangerously) can be enjoyed multiple times throughout the night, without feeling weighed down.
Prohibition also offers an array of wines and sparkling wines by the glass and an assortment of boutique beers for those anti-cocktail connoisseurs.
But aside from the cocktails, live music, and atmosphere, it is the patrons themselves that have helped preserved and continue to protect Prohibition’s mystery and upscale character. Dressing the part in either black or red, and bringing along with them good company has kept the atmosphere authentic, classy, and comfortable, not allowing the infiltration of boisterous drunks nor club goers to disrupt the ambiance.
Following the dress code at Prohibition is essential: password or not, dress code is the real key to getting in the door. When the door bell rings, a video camera outside captures the prospective patron, allowing Vin to decide on whether the person’s attire is up to code, or whether he’ll ignore the call altogether.
For the Ladies: Representative for this age of excess, contrast sassy with classy: pearls, feathers, beads, lace, French veiling, fur, (faux of course!) and flowers are a must! A fascinator for your hair is a fabulous way to combine fun and flirty with chic and sophistication – check out this one from local designer and South Park resident Lauren Christensen.
For the Gents: In the era of machismo and mobsters, the fashion standards for males are high! Slim-fitting sports coats are a sexy timeless look worth the investment. Accompany your look with a fancy silk tie decorated with stripes and geometric shapes to be extra fancy. Top it off with a bowler hat for a sexy added touch.
