On the last Monday of every month, The Whistle Stop in South Park presents an event called Debaser. This is where fearless San Diegans go to read the journals they kept when they were angry, depressed, naïve or simply teenagers, in front of other people.
Nowadays, everyone has a blog. Nowadays, everyone seems to be more comfortable writing about themselves and sharing it with anybody who has an Internet connection. We are less afraid to let people in as long as it's through a computer screen - and overall, I think that is a healthy thing. However, it's always fun to look back.
Have you ever read through your old journals or diaries and been freaked out by your own adolescent mind? Has it ever made you want to drink? This was a time when people wrote their own personal blogs to themselves. Whether it was dealing with crushes, parents, or the death of Kurt Cobain on a rainy day in the late April of 1994 - the same day your sister got you in trouble for sneaking out of the house to go drink beers at Mission Trails - it was all major stuff, and it was yours.
It's all on show at South Park at The Whistle Stop. At 9pm the reading starts, the jaws drop, and everybody has a good time coming to grips with the fact that we are all pretty much the same.
