Anyone who ever witnessed First Street in Encinitas almost a year ago, before being gutted from the inside, would remember this North County favorite in its archaic form.
The former First Street was complete with heavy large stationary saloon stools against a dark cryptic bar that, after a few Jack and Cokes, made you feel like you were living in a scene right out of The Shining. However, upon entering First Street these days, one might be confused, as the bar no longer represents the memories of its original predecessor.
Gone are the days of the eerie saloon, as the current interior of First Street resembles something more along the lines of a bar you might find in the mountains complete with plywood walls and green carpeting. Although this may be more modern than white tiles and a bar that could have easily been left alone since the 20's or 30's, the uniqueness has been mowed over by this newer, more "modern" version.
Along with originality, 25 cent pool tables have also disappeared and in order to play patrons will need to cough up two more quarters. Yet, all has not been lost in the reformation.
First Street now offers a wider selection of beers on tap and still retains its intoxicating selection of tequilas which will become very important for some of us because Karaoke Night has been added to the Tuesday roster. If you're not into making a fool of yourself, but rather trying to "make it," First Street is also holding Open Mic Night every Wednesday.
Happy Hour, which serves all of us working, and non-working stiffs, well with a reason to drown our madness at a reasonable price, begins at 4pm and ends at 7pm from Monday to Friday. This includes $2.50 drafts and wells, which is something, I suppose, nostalgia cannot keep me from enjoying.
Insider Tip: Employees in the nightlife industry should be sure to swing by on Sunday for Industry Night which involves all the Happy Hour specials plus $3 dollar you call its.
