Estranged Beach Drinkers Find Summer Solace at Firehouse

Published : 4/15/2008 by Alexis Griffith

It’s getting hot, and with summer still months away, we can only expect it to get hotter.

The recent alcohol bans on popular spring break and summer destinations like Mission and Pacific Beach have left a crowd of coastal partiers thirsty and without a beach to call home. We ask: How are we supposed to cool off during these raging high temperatures?

Firehouse American Eatery and Lounge in Pacific Beach has made a name for itself over the past year by serving up classic bites and refreshing liquid concoctions that are guaranteed to hose down any thirst. Estranged summer beach drinkers, we’d like you to meet your new home: Firehouse. And no, firemen will not monitor your drink count.

Though Firehouse does not have sand, it does have suds and solar rays. Just cruise on up to the spacious deck and soak up the sun on a fire engine red lounge chair or order a drink from the rooftop bar. With choices like the Sweet Tea, a secret Firehouse recipe, and the coolest beers on tap in all of Pacific Beach, who needs a keg? Pair that with a vast view of the Pacific Ocean and a great little late night menu that runs until midnight (mini corndogs anyone?) and you may never return to the beach again.

Get to the Firehouse early on a weekday and kickback and watch for the mythical “green flash” during happy hour at sunset or drag yourself in for a Sunday Funday brunch and Bloody Mary duo. The daytime-fade-on at the Firehouse is certainly one not to be missed, but sunshine is definitely not the hottest element at this Grand venue.

Friday nights in PB can be rough for some who might prefer a little Gaslamp flair, and Firehouse has solved that problem by creating an upscale atmosphere both in décor and music. Don’t expect a repeat of XM radio or a bar brawl over the “play mine first” jukebox; choose to relax or sway to the cool electro sounds of DJ Craig Smoove among the hip, casual surroundings.

Insider Tip: High temperatures usually mean high traffic, so utilize the Firehouse valet. Come on – it’s only a couple bucks; compare that with the inevitable tow and valet will suddenly become very reasonable.
