Gallagher’s: More than Green Beer this St. Patty’s Day

Published : 3/13/2008 by Alexis Griffith

Dreadlocks, Birkenstocks, guitar-playing transients, bare-footed maniacs, late-night Irish jewelry peddlers, hippies, homeless, surfers, stoners, and burn-outs are just a few notable stereotypes usually employed to describe the demographic that graces Ocean Beach.

Yes, this sleepy little San Diego beach town might be a little rough around the edges with its loutish looking Hells Angels-types that can be seen hanging around in front of one of many churches that line Sunset Cliffs Boulevard after an AA meeting. But what a better way to spend this upcoming holiday of debauchery than to frolic along with all the other crazies who will no doubt help you to look like less of a maniac in the midst of a St. Patty's Day bender.

One part Ocean Beach and one part Irish pub is the concoction that is Gallagher's Pub and Grill, tucked away on Newport Avenue. Gallagher's is typical of most Irish pubs in San Diego with their scantily clad waitresses, grumpy bartenders, dark lighting, and Irish proverbs, often in the form of Guinness ads; however, Gallagher's has also incorporated all the elements that are essentially Ocean Beach. Reggae, reggae lovers, and music in general, is Gallagher's staple; inviting patrons to drop in and have a pint while bopping and swaying to the rhythmic beats of island music.

Cool beats of the Caribbean are not the only sounds emitted from this pub as Gallagher's also has a lot of love for the little guy and encourages local musicians from all corners of the music world to have a go on their stage, (be mindful - when I say "stage" I mean a stage about 15ftx10ft, and the venue itself is not incredibly large and has the potential to become crowded). But if you want to drink some green beer, listen to an array of tunes and do it in a place where you can be totally hammered without shame, Gallagher's is welcoming the Irish in all of us with open arms.

Insider Tip: For all you Guitar Hero addicts out there Gallagher's hosts Guitar Hero night on Mondays.

Gallaghers Pub

I thought this whole review was quite negative .Ob in general has changed quite a bit in the last few months. Gallaghers Pub is actually nothing like your typical Irish bar, it is Irish owned and operated and nothing like the other generic Irish san diego bars you will see Its is a welcome change in Ocean beach combining the Irish music with local and fantastic san diego bands The stage in the bar looks quite small rumor on the street is that they are replacing it some things about the review i disliked you cannot get hammered without shame , its not that kind of place, its got high standards. It was mention that that Gallaghers serves green beer , i dont believe it does i dont think that the bar fits in exactly in Ocean beach as it is so different , kind of along the lines of nicks in ocean beach and third corner, I would say without doubt it is one of the best bars in san diego
