Gaslamp Mardi Gras: A Spin on Tradition

Observing Mardi Gras as a historic and age-old custom might not register for most of us. After all, this isn’t exactly your grandmother’s holiday (unless your grandma likes to get crazy and has a massive bead collection). Today, we honor Fat Tuesday with a grandiose party that trumps all the rest, using booze and beads as helpful tools to get in the spirit.

It’s that time of year again when San Diegans must brace themselves for the 18th Annual Gaslamp Mardi Gras celebration that entertains over 16 downtown blocks. On Tuesday, Feb. 21st, the Mardi Gras revelry will begin at 6pm and light up our city in a vibrant display of wild festivities. While the line-up is still yet to be announced, we’re already marking our calendar and blocking out all Tuesday night plans.

This massive block party is an outdoor celebration that features an extraordinary masquerade parade down 5th Avenue. Top DJ’s in the industry will provide the soundtrack, while tasty treats, cold beverages and an overload of beads will be readily available. Guests can also look forward to elaborately themed areas, live entertainment, and a haze of purple, green, and gold jewel tones around every corner.

Gaslamp Mardi Gras is one of the most anticipated festivals on the west coast, with over 40,000 expected to be in attendance. After the success of last year’s event, this year is already planning on special guest appearances from the industry's top electronic, dubstep, and house DJs.

2012 Gaslamp Mardi Gras: The party kicks off at 6pm and goes until midnight. Tickets are $20 dollars in advance and $25 at the door; attendees must be 21 years or older. For more information, visit gaslamp.org

Stay tuned for the full line-up of DJs and live entertainment!
