Gringo's Cantina in Pacific Beach

Published : 2/18/2008 by Alexis Griffith

There aren't very many places in Pacific Beach where one can get away from all the yahoos and black-bandana-bros. Nor are there very many dining and drinking options free from mildew, mold and that ever-present and constantly lingering smell of fish.

But then, what is one to do? We all love the beach. Gringo's Cantina in Pacific Beach, for the last several years has provided one safe-haven where we can get away from the ambience of a beach bungalow and recline in the refreshing, yet still casual, atmosphere of modern décor.

Above and beyond anything, the margaritas at Gringo's are the staple of all that is good and right with Pacific Beach. The Perfecto, the Gringo's version of the Cadillac, could impress even the biggest margarita snob. Gringo's presents their concoctions in one of two options, the Grande and the Gigante, and the second is really the only way to go.

Order the Gigante and be pleasantly surprised to find a colossal fish bowl in place of your drink. In addition, Gringo's generously offers the Gigante for the price of the Grande every Thursday. And if not in the mood for a marg, Gringo's also has an extensive wine list to go with that ridiculous tequila menu.

Besides the seductive happy hour specials that will keep you glued to your chair all night long (until you fall off), Gringo's also takes it a step further than the average Mexican food restaurant by including a naughty cheese dip that arrives alongside the chips and salsa. Yet, the staff line-up might be too distracting for anyone to even think about eating, as I believe that one of the job requirements may include: must look good naked. So if you're hankering for a margarita with a side dish of eye candy, Gringo's certainly hits the spot. This Pacific Beach bar may not be totally free of beach bums, but at least they're required to wear shoes.

Insider Tip: Tapas Tuesday is the time to visit with a great menu of delectable small plates paired with $2.50 Mexican draft beer and $2 you-call-its. Note: the Tapas don't start until 10pm so don't jump the gun, if that's what you're going for.
